On the Diablo II: Resurrected Grind

As you gather your builds, piece by painstaking piece, for each of your characters, you will start becoming stronger and be granted more options as to where you can farm. One myth is that farming is all about how much MF (Magic Find) you stack. That has been proven wrong as a person with less than 200% MF can still find high-end gear and runes, just as well as a player with over 400% MF. What’s important is that you clear as many mobs as possible, as fast as you can, it’s a matter of quantity not MF quality.

To put it clinically, it’s about the number of mobs killed per the time you spend in-game. Therefore, Hell Cows is still (even after 20 years) one of the most desirable places for players to farm. The snag is that Hell Cows can be a challenge if you don’t have enough AOE (Area of Effect) damage to wipe out large groups of mobs at the same time.

How to Farm Efficiently

If you can’t wipe out Hell Cows, where is the best place to farm in Diablo II Resurrected? The answer is simple but unfortunately not a revelation: there is no single one place that gives the best loot. It’s all about finding a place that works for you. Here are a couple of things you can check before choosing your farming route.

  1. Which immunities are your worst enemies?

Cold Sorceresses for example might have a hard time farming area areas such as the Countess as she is ALWAYS surrounded by her “Immune to Cold” minions. She herself is also “Immune to Cold” AND “Immune to Fire”. So maybe your best bet to farm as a Cold Sorceress is areas such as the Ancient Tunnels in Act 2 where there are barely any “Immune to Cold” mobs. Always consider your build and what mobs it is weak against.

  • Am I built for single-target damage? AOE?

Some skills such as the “Frozen Orb” are explosive in boss fights, provided you can measure the casting distance right and have it land on the boss. If you can master this, I’d recommend running bosses like Mephisto. You can quickly teleport and farm him.

Once you’ve answered these questions, you will be able to map out a path showing where you should be farming. As I said, don’t worry about stacking MF just yet. Just make sure you are gearing up to be able to pump out enough damage to clear monsters and bosses quickly. I have less than 190% MF and I have gathered some notable drops.

Mephisto – Arachnid’s Mesh Spiderweb Sash, Sandstorm Treks Sacarabshell Boots

Ancient Tunnels – Several Ist Runes, Mal Runes

Countess – Several Ist Runes, Mal Runes, Gul Runes

Arcane Sanctuary – Various valuable charms such as 7% Magic Find + 10% Cold resistance small charms, 39% Enhanced Damage Jewel

Tomb Runs (Killing mobs in all of Tal Rasha’s Tombs) – Vipermagi, Magefist, Goldwrap, Skill Grand Charms. This turned out to be a great place for me to find my mid-range gear to work my way up.

These are just some of the farming locations I’ve used, but I have to say, Hell Cows is still the most profitable place thus far. I’ve had amazing results farming Hell Cows solo and I’ve had the following notable drops: Tal Rasha’s Armour, Lo Rune, Sur Rune, Ber Rune (Lost due to server rollbacks in the early launch days, thanks Blizzard).

Best Builds for Farming

Farming for runes is all about killing as many monsters as possible (a repeated beat in this article). It’s best if you gear and build something that can pump out damage in a large area. Some of the most popular builds for clearing cows are as follows:

Blizzard Sorceress – I have tried a Frozen Orb, Meteor, and the Blizzard Sorc, and I find that the synergies that come with Blizzard make this the strongest contender for clearing groups of mobs as fast as possible. There may be some bosses or named Hell Cows that come Cold Immune, but you should be able to handle most mobs you encounter.

Holy Hammer Paladin – One of the most popular builds due to its high potential damage, the range it has after a couple of casts, and how difficult it is to run into “Immune to Spinning Hammers of Death” monsters.

Lightning Fury Amazon – My personal favorite build for Hell Cows. Not only does it pump out massive amounts of damage at a far range, but it also looks super ELECTRIC while doing it. Killing Hell Cows in style while making fat loot, isn’t this what Diablo is all about?

Whirlwind Barbarian – Not a class that requires button clicks or pages of tactics. Right-click and spin to win!

Lightning Sorceress – This is a build for the super-rich folks. To collect the pieces of equipment that will be required to maximize your damage, you will be breaking the bank. You’ll need the Griffon’s Eye and the Infinity Runeword. Good luck gearing end game stuff for this one!

Lightning Trap Assassin – I have yet to play this build in Diablo II Resurrected just yet, but I’m going to imagine the downsides are similar to the Lighting Sorceress build in that Infinity costs an arm and a leg to obtain.

Whatever your build is, make sure that it’s something that you enjoy playing, not just what’s popular.

Tip: In order to expand the areas you are able to farm make sure to not neglect your mercenary. A properly geared Mercenary from Act 2 can help you in any number of locations. With my Act 2 mercenary, as a full Cold damage sorceress, I can easily farm Countess, Hell Cows monsters that have immunity to cold, or Chaos Sanctuary.

I equip my mercenary with the Insight Runeword for the meditation aura (allows me to teleport infinitely without mana shortages), Sharktooth Armour (for the heavy defense) and Tal Raha’s Helmet (for the life leech). This isn’t the most optimized gear, but very affordable and it will help you take care of immunity monsters and tank while you stand back and blow shit up.
