Genshin Impact Chongyun Build and Lore

Chongyun
By | October 9th, 2022 | Categories: Genshin Impact

Name: Chongyun

Vision: Cryo

Birthday: 7 September

Constellation: Nubis Caesor

Titles: Frozen Ardor, Banisher of Evils and Rumors Thereof

Chongyun may have fallen from the current meta, but using him as a DPS or support character can still be done in Genshin Impact. Spirit Blade: Chonghua’s Layered Frost (E) blankets an area with ice, applying Cyro to enemies caught within it. It also infuses frost into melee weapons (sword, claymore, polearm), causing users to deal Cryo DMG with every attack.

His first ascension passive gives an ASPD bonus for melee weapon users. With his fourth ascension passive, a Spirit Blade will be summoned after its duration. The blade deals another bout of AoE elemental damage and reduces enemies’ resistance to Cryo. Getting his second constellation upgrade decreases the cooldown of abilities used within this skill’s affected area.

Spirit Blade: Cloud Parting Star (Q) summons three (four with his last constellation upgrade) icy blades crashing down on an area. Each one explodes as they land, dealing AoE Cryo DMG and launching opponents.

With the arrival of self-sufficient Cryo DPS characters, Chongyun has fallen into niche builds. However, he could still be an excellent supporter or a Burst damager with suitable investments.

Genshin Impact Chongyun Builds

Support

His E’s cooldown is enough to keep it up continuously, so this concerns his Burst more. With a Noblesse Oblige set, using his Burst will boost the party’s ATK. Combine that with a 20% boost to damage, and you’ll want to spam that skill. His Burst also charges up quickly, and you can keep his E skill up nearly constantly.

Possible Sets: Noblesse Oblige

Main Stats: Energy Recharge/ATK%, Cryo DMG Bonus, Crit Rate/DMG

Substats: Energy Recharge, Crit DMG/Rate, ATK

DPS

Chongyun can either be a ‘main’ DPS who uses his AA or a Sub-DPS where you’ll only use his abilities. His artifact sets depend on how you want to use him. He can use Blizzard Strayer with his E, though most players would focus on his Burst instead. However, if you want him to be the active dealer, it’s better to use Blizzard Strayer and an ATK +18% set.

Possible Sets: Blizzard Strayer, Emblem of Severed Fate (Burst DPS), Combination of Blizzard Strayer, Noblesse, or ATK+18% sets

Main Stats: The same as above, with a greater focus on raising ATK instead of ER

Substats: Same

Weapons

Chongyun is a claymore user, which favors slow, heavy strikes over the speedier, lighter swords and polearms. He doesn’t have a signature weapon, but here are the most recommended ones:

  • Wolf’s Gravestone
  • Skyward Pride
  • Prototype Archaic
  • Sacrificial Greatsword
  • Favonius Greatsword
  • Lithic Blade
  • Luxurious Sea-Lord
  • Akuoumaru
  • Royal Greatsword
  • Katsuragikiri Nagamasa
  • Debate Club

Make sure to match the weapon substat and passive with the build you’re going for.

Chongyun Recommended Team Composition

Chongyun is the original DPS of the meta ‘National Team’ consisting of him, Bennett, Xiangling, and Xingqiu. As the latter three’s popularity could attest, this team uses reactions, namely Melt, Freeze, and Vaporize, to deal damage. With Pyro Resonance, Bennett’s buffs, and the elemental combinations, this is an excellent F2P team.

He also shines in Cryo/Freeze teams with characters that do not use infusions. Although his E can overwrite some, most would overwrite his. Your best bet is to use Cryo characters to take advantage of his elemental infusion. Eula is an exception, though, because most of her damage is still Physical DMG.

Genshin Impact Chongyun Lore (Backstory)

Chongyun was born to a well-known clan of exorcists in Liyue. However, from birth, he had a pure yang constitution. While it did mean that he’ll become an excellent exorcist, he is also fated to never see a spirit. They are too terrified of his aura to come near him.

His constitution also placed several limits on him to avoid ‘heaty’ things. He can’t go to hot springs, eat hot, warm, spicy food, or spend too long in the sun. Xiangling supplies him with several popsicles to cool him down in those cases, though sometimes it’s not enough.

His clan once celebrated in Wanmin Restaurant, where he accidentally ate rice balls spiced with Jueyun Chili. Chongyun had no recollection of what he’d done. Later, Xiangling would tell him later that he:

  • Declared that everything’s on him (despite having no Mora)
  • Went around tables chatting with customers as if they were old friends and sampled their dishes
  • ‘Sensed’ an evil spirit in the restaurant. (He just slapped a talisman on Xiangling and chased her around with a sword.)

Embarrassed, Chongyun apologized to the chef, but Xiangling thought that Chongyun was the real one under the frigid walls.

Another anecdote of his encounters with ‘heaty’ things is one of Xinyan’s impromptu rock concerts. Xingqiu had brought Chongyun over to listen, but the heated atmosphere triggered his unusual constitution. Our icy exorcist climbed up to the stage and rocked along with the musician, which impressed the latter. Of course, this led to Chongyun adding another thing to avoid to his list.

His yang constitution makes him an excellent exorcist, but it seriously messes with his desire to see a proper spirit. No matter what assignment he takes, he still hasn’t found one that can take his aura, as Xinqiu had suggested.

Before his friend mentioned it, he had been trying to suppress his aura to a manageable level. Other than letting him see spirits, it would also help him tolerate heat more. After the suggestion, though, Chongyun started to take more cases to find that mythical ‘immune to yang aura’ spirit.

Xingqiu’s tips and rumors seldom pan out (because his friend likes to yank his chain), but Chongyun is still grateful. He’d appreciate it if the swordsman would dial down the mischief a little, though.

All of the above contributed to his reputation as a cool exorcist who would never hesitate to help.

Lastly, his desire to see a spirit stems from his aspiration to add to the clan’s exorcist books. It had all sorts of illustrations and descriptions, and one day he’ll have his own addition of a genuine spirit in the book. For now, his imagination will have to do. Although, what kind of spirits are a seven-winged, five-legged chicken and a half-fish half-hilichurl demon?
