Best Upcoming Game Releases (2022)

Let us welcome 2022 with open arms! While 2021 was quite the hurdle for just about everyone and everything, we gamers found refuge in video games. From the colorful stories of It Takes Two and Psychonauts 2 to the spooks and scares from the E.M.M.I.s in Metroid Dread and the malignant villains in Resident Evil Village, the games that we’ve played during that year made things – at least for a while – a bit better. Looking at the 2022 calendar, the year is jam-packed with big, triple-A releases. 2021 was an odd year, given that the studios and developers felt the impact of the pandemic. This led to 2022 having a video game release schedule that is unparalleled for the industry. Heck, even if half of them are delayed, this year will still be a strong one as far as game releases are concerned. Because of that, there are currently plenty of games to look forward to.

  1. Horizon Forbidden West

When we first saw the initial gameplay trailer for Horizon Forbidden West, we were awestruck; everything about it looked so… cinematic. Truly, it’s a game that’ll show the true potential of what a PlayStation 5 can do. 2021 had some great games, but the library for the PS5 isn’t exactly worth bragging about, so finally having Horizon Forbidden West being part of the ever-growing collection should put the console into the limelight for 2022. Forbidden West will see Aloy’s journey as she continues to explore new biomes. With Aloy getting a facelift for her combat, traversal, as well as skill trees, this is one game that PlayStation owners shouldn’t miss. Horizon Forbidden West is set to release on February 18 for the PS4 and PS5.

  1. Elden Ring

Come on, you know we had to talk about Elden Ring at some point in this blog post! An ambitious open-world take on the Dark Souls formula, Elden Ring is a challenging-but-rewarding action RPG made by FromSoftware. In here, you’ll be able to explore the Lands Between, a vast medieval world that’s inhabited by your fantasy worlds – deadly warriors, dragons, ethereal beings, you name it. In Elden Ring, you, the protagonist, will embark on a quest to restore the broken land by becoming the new Elden Lord. Players have already gotten a brief taste of what’s to come in the beta test from November 2021, and it’s not long before the masses can get their hands on the game, as Elden Ring releases on February 25 for the PC, Xbox One/Series X, and PS4/5.

  1. God of War: Ragnarok

The God of War title for the PS4 changed the series as a whole. Without deviating too much from the hack-and-slash gameplay mechanics, the game kept to its roots despite getting a fresh coat of paint in the visuals and art style. Known as the second and final game in Kratos’ Norse saga, God of War: Ragnarok is essentially Santa Monica and Sony’s worst-kept secret. Fans were already talking about it before the first trailer was released. Following the defeat of the Olympian gods, Kratos and his son, Atreus, return to the realm of Midgard. The developer, Santa Monica, describes Ragnarok as the “finale” and the rebirth of Kratos and Atreus’ world. Many were surprised to learn that it was the end of the saga, but in this way, we can expect a new, action-packed entry soon. God of War: Ragnarok will no doubt be an epic journey that’s set to answer all of the questions from 2018’s GoW. There’s no definitive release date given for the title just yet, but we can expect it to release sometime in 2022.

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 (actual title TBA)

The sequel to Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch is set to be a direct follow-up to the previous title – this, in itself, is a rarity in the Legend of Zelda series. The LoZ franchise has always created one game after another without being directly tied down to its previous installment, but we all know that Nintendo has all kinds of backstories that are just waiting to be discovered in the BOTW universe. Since the game’s announcement in 2019, Nintendo has been hush-hush for the most part, releasing only a couple of trailers and sparse comments. What you can be sure of though is the expectations for Breath of the Wild 2 is through the roof – it’s a sequel to one of the best Nintendo Switch games ever made, after all. Luckily, according to recent reports, the sequel to BOTW is still on track for a 2022 release.

  1. Pokemon Legends: Arceus

It’d be blasphemy if I didn’t talk about Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Returning to the Sinnoh Region of long ago called the Hisui Region, Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a grand, role-playing adventure game set in a semi-open world. Alongside new battle mechanics on how to catch, tame, and battle, there are also fresh and familiar Pokemon faces to expect. Such examples include new Pokemon forms for Voltorb, Growlithe, and Zorua. What makes Pokemon Legends: Arceus unique and exciting compared to its previous installment is the different approach than the mainline RPGs. I’m expecting that this game will leave a major impact on the franchise, and the release date isn’t far too off, as it comes to the Nintendo Switch on January 28.

  1. Sonic Frontiers

Pokemon isn’t the only franchise that’s receiving the open-world treatment. It’s been nearly five years since the last release of Sonic’s mainline 3D adventure, Sonic Forces. And while that title received lukewarm reviews from critics, it was an okay game. Fast forward to 2022, we’re getting Sonic Frontiers, an “open-zone-inspired” experience that’ll feature an original storyline. There’s not that much to know about the “open-zone” Sonic game just yet, but I’m exceedingly curious how it’ll play out. Sonic Frontiers is scheduled to release sometime in holiday 2022 on Windows PC, Xbox One/Series X, PS4/5, and Nintendo Switch.

  1. Bayonetta 3

Who isn’t hyped about the return of the flamboyant, gun-wielding Bayonetta? Bayonetta 2 was released in 2014, but many hoped – and believed – that someday, there’d be a threequel. Bayonetta 3 was announced more than four years ago, and this time, she’ll be fighting mysterious new foes using new abilities. Everything about Bayonetta 3 was kept under wraps after the release of the first trailer, but then Nintendo decided to suddenly drop the bomb on us with new gameplay footage in September 2021. The gameplay showed a couple of Bayonetta’s new abilities called the Demon Masquerade where she fuses with a demon to wield magical powers. Then there’s the Demon Slave that gives her the power to command Infernal Demons to do her bidding. Bayonetta 3 has a release date in 2022 – fingers crossed that Nintendo won’t delay this one!

  1. Dying Light 2: Stay Human

Dying Light is a one-of-a-kind, first-person parkour game that’s absolutely a joy to play amidst the oversaturated zombie survival genre, so having a more refined version through Dying Light 2: Stay Human is nothing but a treat. You once again play as a protagonist who must leap across rooftops – whether you want to avoid engagements with zombies or face them head-on is up to your playstyle preference. But, it should be worth noting that the game’s city-based location is built in a manner where the higher elevations are safer than staying on the lower floors. Dying Light 2: Stay Human will also see the introduction of useful items like paraglider wings and hooks to make the parkour experience even better. It’ll be interesting to see how Dying LIght 2 will breathe new life into an old formula, as it releases on February 4 on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS4/5, and Nintendo Switch.

  1. Starfield

Fallout and Elder Scrolls developer, Bethesda, is heading to the deep underbellies of space with Starfield, the studio’s next grand role-playing video game. Todd Howard, the game director, described Starfield as “Skyrim but in space”. Not much has been confirmed about the game, but players are more than ready to see how Bethesda’s newest IP holds up after the recent slip-up with Fallout 76. There’s not much meat on the bone if we’re going to talk about gameplay, but according to Bethesda, Starfield is all about “searching for an answer to life’s greatest mystery, hope, and our shared humanity”. Perhaps we’ll finally know what the game truly offers when it releases on November 11 for PC and Xbox SeriesX/S (available on Game Pass).

  1. Stray

Stray may not be as big as some of the titles on this list, but trust me, it’s at least worth looking into if you’re looking for something unique to play. From the minds of Annapurna Interactive and Blue Twelve, Stray is set in a cyberpunk world where you control a stray cat that roams the neon-lit city streets to uncover the mysteries of the world inhabited by deadly creatures and droids on their journey home. Playing as a cat isn’t entirely a new concept – heck, there’s even a game where you can play as an annoying goose (Untitled Goose Game, of course). Stray is scheduled for release in 2022 (no definitive date yet) for PC, and PS4/5.
