Walk the Dinosaur: ARK Taming 101

ARK: Survival Evolved is like a cross between Monster Hunter and ARMA. Getting the best guns, taking down dinosaurs and other big beasts, and raiding other players bases are the most popular activities within the game. Well, how about taming the creatures, like in Pokemon? Who doesn’t want his or her T-Rex? If you don’t know where to start, but you want to give it a shot then no worries. We are going to teach you how to tame in ARK.

Ark Taming

Violence is the Answer

If you think you can just do what Chris Pratt did to the Velociraptors in Jurassic World in ARK, I don’t think so. You have to prepare mentally to catch a particular kind of dinosaur since a different method for each one is necessary. It’s also important to be up in the ranks. I know, easier said than done.

Aside from having an idea in mind, what else is essential to bring to the field so that you can catch a dinosaur? Weapons that can make your target get 50 Torpor and fall unconscious. The rule is that the higher the damage of a weapon, the more Torpor it induces. The bare minimum to get the job done is with a slingshot and 30-50 stones as ammo. If you want a faster way to knock them out and don’t mind going melee, a wooden club and electric prod are proper choices. Lastly, if you want to KO dinosaurs without sacrificing the safety of using a ranged weapon, a bow or crossbow with tranquilizer arrow and longneck rifles with tranquilizer darts, or shocking tranquilizer darts should do the trick.

Once you’ve taken out the dinosaur, give it some food by transferring food items to its inventory every time it raises its head. What you have to give depends on its diet. If it’s an herbivore, give it berries when its Hunger drops 20 points, and Advanced Berries once it falls 40 points. As for carnivores, any meat item is fine if their Hunger falls 50 points. Also, different dinosaurs eat kibble once their Hunger falls 80 points, so bring one just in case.

Make sure to have narcoberries because you have to force-feed the dinosaur to tame it. The number of narcoberries depends on how big of the dinosaur you want to catch. The bigger the dinosaur, the more berries.

Monster Hugger

Now, if you’re more of the tree-hugger type, there’s a violent-free method of taming. However, it’s only limited to fifteen specific monsters, which include the following:

  1. Araneo
  2. Arthropluera
  3. Basilosaurus
  4. Chalicotherium
  5. Dung Beetle
  6. Gigantopithecus
  7. Ichthyosaurus
  8. Lystrosaurus
  9. Manta
  10. Mesopithecus
  11. Moschops
  12. Onyc
  13. Vulture
  14. Mantis
  15. Diplodocus

You can tame the last one (Diplodocus) both ways: violent and non-violent. Keep in mind that non-violent ones are less complicated and aren’t heavy on the heart.

Ark Taming

Each of these creatures wants a particular item. Put the taming item in the far-right slot of your sidebar, then slowly approach your target, and press E to hand over the food. Depending on the monster, you’ll not have to worry about anything (specifically with Lystrosaurus, Ichthyosaurus, and Moschops), or there are special precautions in the beginning. Apply bug repellant when taming Araneo, Arthropluera, Onyc, Dung Beetle, and Manta. Ensure that you don’t touch Gigantopithecus and Manta (they attack), and Mesopithecus (they run).

Hopefully, with these tips, you’ll finally bring home the dinosaur of your choice.  Things don’t always go smoothly, especially in the beginning. You might screw up a few times. Remember, practice makes perfect for your dino-catching skills. Succeeding is a question of when rather than if. Make it happen! Read more: How to Hatch Eggs in ARK: Survival Evolved.
