How to Get Mewtwo in Pokemon Go

Mewtwo Pokemon

Many would say you’re not playing a Pokemon game correctly if you’re not trying to catch them all. Amongst the many Pokemon available to catch in Pokemon Go, Mewtwo has always been one of the rarest legendaries in the game. As a Legendary Pokemon from the First Generation, the opportunities to catch Mewtwo are few and far between. Besides being a strong Pokemon right off the bat, Mewtwo became a fan favorite of many trainers because of its lore.

If you’ve ever played the original games back in the Gameboy, then you know that Mewtwo was a secret reward for those of us that managed to complete the game and decided to explore the Kanto region further. In Pokemon Go, however, catching the Psychic type bipedal isn’t as simple as running around and hoping to get lucky. There are a bunch of strategies, items, and events to consider.

Why is Mewtwo Popular in Pokemon Go?

To give you a general idea of Mewtwo, the Pokemon is a Psychic-type—making it weak to Ghost, Dark, and Bug-type moves. Be careful about using Psychic and Fighting-type Pokemon when facing the Legendary Pokemon, as any moves from that type are ineffective on Mewtwo. But hey, I’m not here to talk about Mewtwo’s defensiveness since it’s not its main appeal. I’m here to talk about how its pure attack power (or CP, in this case) makes it helpful in many situations.

By any metric, Mewtwo is considered an S-tier attacker in Pokemon Go. Even if you’ve got Pokemon resistant to Psychic-type moves, your team will still need to be heavily fortified to withstand Mewtwo’s onslaught. If you ever think about facing the Legendary Pokemon, even if your Pokemon is vulnerable to Psychic moves—don’t. It’s best to abandon the fight, lest your whole team wipes out.

Getting Mewtwo in Pokemon Go

The chances to catch Mewtwo in Pokemon are scarce. Nonetheless, it’s not impossible, and there are several established ways to get it.

  1. Participate in Raids

For the past few years, trainers have seen Mewtwo surface in Pokemon Go during the July raid events. During those times, if you miss the event, you’ll have to try your luck next year. Thankfully, Niantic has rectified this, and now you can see Mewtwo and even Armored Mewtwo in the regular rotation of five-star raids for Pokemon Go. Since the Pokemon is more accessible now, there are more opportunities for you to snag a Mewtwo in the foreseeable future.

In five-star raids, you need to team up with several other trainers. I recommend using the best Dark, Ghost, or Bug-type Pokemon in your arsenal since they’re effective against Psychic Pokemon. A five-star Mewtwo raid is as challenging as it sounds, and it can be overwhelming if you’re only with one other trainer. I advise calling some friends to take on the challenge with at least three more members. That way, you’ll have a higher chance of winning. Once the grueling battle is over, you’ll get a limited amount of Premiere Pokeballs. If you want to make the most of them, make great to excellent throws since that increases the chance of getting Mewtwo. And don’t forget to use your Silver Pinap, Razz, or Golden Razz berries—they also help ease the process.

If you’ve been actively playing Pokemon Go for a while, then you probably know that Mewtwo was part of the game’s Tour Event on February 2022 and was also part of the rewards you’d get for defeating Team Rocket back in October 2020. It’s safe to say that Mewtwo comes and goes, so if you ever see it pop up on a five-star raid, don’t let that chance slip by.

  1. Trade With A Friend

If you’ve got any friends (very, very good friends) actively playing Pokemon Go, you can trade a Mewtwo with them. Granted, it’s a tricky proposition, but it’s possible. The only main caveat with this idea is that you’ll have to spend tons of Stardust. Here’s a chart depicting the Stardust required to trade a Legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Go, depending on your friend status with another trainer:

Friend TypeRegistered Legendary PokemonNew Legendary Pokemon
Good Friends20,000 Stardust1,000,000 Stardust
Great Friends16,000 Stardust800,000 Stardust
Ultra Friends1,600 Stardust80,000 Stardust
Best Friends800 Stardust40,000 Stardust

The cost to trade a Legendary Pokemon that’s not registered on your Pokedex can be a sight to behold, but if you have the Best Friend status with a trainer on your Friends List, 40,000 Stardust isn’t too bad of a deal. You should note that once a Pokemon is traded, your friend cannot trade it back, so they have to be sure they want to part ways with their Mewtwo. Because of this, it’s best to trade with a buddy that already has multiple Mewtwos in their storage.

Is it Possible to Get Shadow Mewtwo?

For now, it’s impossible to get Shadow Mewtwo since none of the Team Rocket members have it in their lineup. The last time Shadow Mewtwo was featured when in February 2021, and you had to complete a Special Team Rocket Research Task to earn a Super Rocket Radar. With it, you could face Giovanni for a chance to defeat him and grab a Shadow Legendary Pokemon. Only time will tell when we can expect Shadow Mewtwo to make a return to Pokemon Go, but as it stands, the only way to trade is to trade with a friend that has it.

What’s the Difference Between A Regular and A Shiny Mewtwo?

The only thing that makes a Shiny Mewtwo different from a regular one is that its tail is green instead of pink. A Shiny Pokemon doesn’t necessarily have better attacks or IVs—they’re unique in terms of visuals only since they don’t have the usual color palette on their regular variants. They’re only sought after due to their extremely low spawn rate, but if you’re a shiny collector, a Shiny Mewtwo is one of the holy grails that would make any trainer green with envy.

How to Counter Mewtwo

As I’ve said before, the best way to counter Mewtwo is to use Pokemon that are Ghost, Dark, or Bug-types. You could also choose to use Pokemon that aren’t those types but still have moves that are effective on Mewtwo. Here are the best counters for the Legendary Pokemon:

Pray Luck is On Your Side

Niantic periodically rotates which Legendary or Mega Pokemon shows up in raids. If luck is on your side, you’ll get the chance to battle and catch Mewtwo without waiting too long. But if you always want to stay updated, check the Pokemon News every day; you never know when five-star Mewtwo raids may be announced.
