Covering Ground on the Best Places to Land in Fortnite

“Where we droppin’ boys?”

Okay, you’ve heard it. If you haven’t heard it, congrats. I just shared it with you. It’s the classic trope of the popular TPS and survival game Fortnite Battle Royale. It’s the point where you leap out of an airplane, pop a parachute, and land with your team (or by yourself, if you’re playing solos) somewhere on the island. However, your success in the game is greatly determined by where you land. In this guide, I’m going to take you through where to go—and where not to go—to achieve maximum results on the Best Places to Land in Fortnite.

Where to Go

First things first—you can land anywhere on the map. Anywhere wherever. Most people go to the larger loot spawn areas that have names on them, but some people go to small houses on the outskirts because it’s unlikely you’ll have to fight immediately. I mean, shoot, you could even land in the middle of a field and be just peachy. It’s really up to you, but if you want to get a good gun, there are a couple “big name” places to go. The biggest, hands down, is Tilted Towers, a small city with the best loot and the largest number of people. You will almost certainly die if you go there without a lot of practice in the game. It’s a cesspool of violence and death. In the unlikely event you make it out alive (and I say unlikely because even if you are a very good player, there’s a solid chance that there’s a sniper in a building that’s watching you. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been shot in the back there), you’ll have some of the best loot in the game.

Another place that I would certainly recommend is Pleasant Park, Greasy Grove, Snobby Shores (if you go Snobby, go to the far left, greenhouse and go to the basement first), and Retail Row. They all have a nice grouping of houses that provide reliable loot and, although there will certainly be people there, it isn’t nearly as hectic as Tilted. What you’re going to want to do is pick a house, be the first one there, and put a hole in the roof to get the chest. After that, loot the rest of the house and go from there.

If you aren’t one for houses, go to either Anarchy Acres or Fatal Fields, two farm locations on opposite ends of the map that have decent stuff and tend to be very popular because of the way you can fight in the open, expansive farms. There will be people landing with you, and generally speaking, they will land with you. I mean that they will land literally right beside you or on top of you because the areas to loot are small. You better be prepared to fight immediately if you go there. If you get nervous, head past to Lucky Landing, a place right on the outskirts that has quality loot and virtually no players for some reason.

The one place you never want to go is Haunted Hills or Shifty Shafts. Why? Don’t they have great loot opportunities, a ton of chests, and tons of weapons spawns? Well, yes, they do, but they’re my spots that I go every time, so go elsewhere! Ha! But in all seriousness, if you want surprisingly great stuff, head to Haunted or Shifty. I have gotten Scars multiple times in a row there. There are a number of chests at each spot (more at Haunted), they aren’t often very popular locations, and boy oh boy the stuff you find there is glorious…. Most of the time. A portion of the time, you’ll come out with absolute garbage. It’s a risk I would recommend you take.

Where Not to Go

The rest of the places on the map are based largely on personal preference. Some people really like Wailing Woods, which is a single loot area in the middle of a giant forest. I hate it, personally, because even if you loot everything, you have to run for approximately eight thousand years before coming across another player, and even then it’s quite likely someone has set an ambush in the dark trees. There’s nothing more annoying than running for that long, watching the number of people go down, then get shot in the back out of nowhere and die. It’s, uh, the worst thing ever. Don’t ever land there if you have more than you and a buddy in your group. There’s nowhere near enough stuff for a squad. Trust me. Just don’t do it.

Another place I would stay clear of is Dusty Depot, which is right smack dab in the middle of the map. It’s got decent stuff there, but you’re unbelievably exposed. You have to run through eternities of open, sprawling fields to get anywhere else. Again, you’re just asking to be ambushed. People can see you (and you can see them) for very great distances, so if you’re not careful, they’ll hide behind a tree and wait for you to run up carelessly. It’s just not worth it.

Some people will tell you to never go Tilted. I won’t tell you that, but it’s a popular opinion. There’s just so much death there that it can be incredibly hard to come out alive. In a lot of the map, you can generally survive if you’re smart, sticking to cover and all that. In Tilted, the craziest stuff happens. You can never anticipate what might happen next. Also, a lot of very good players go there to test themselves and rack up kills, so land there at your own risk.

Personally, I hate Moisty Mire. Moisty is a decent spot to get stuff, but it’s also a dangerous one. The water slows you down, so in the event of a firefight, if you’re in the swamp and they’re not, you will die. You can hardly move, it’s annoying to try to build, and you’ll just be standing out in the open saying “don’t shoot.” Even if people don’t get you, you’re right on the edge of the map. If the storm circle closes far away from you, it’ll take forever for you to get out of the swamp. I’ve seen plenty of people get stuck in the slow-moving-waters and get killed by the storm because they weren’t able to run like normal. Hilarious for me? Yes. Hilarious for them? Not so much.

You can’t go too wrong. All the stuff that I have said are basic guidelines, but some people swear by the most random things, like the one house right in the middle of freakin’ nowhere. They’ll go nowhere else. There are only a few spots that I can accurately say are always, one hundred percent of the time, a terrible idea.

First off, don’t try to leave the main island. There are little islands around it, but you can’t land there and you will die in the water. Just don’t do it. I’ve tried.

Don’t land in a riverbed near a heavily trafficked area like Tilted. First off, there’s no loot. Second off, everyone can see you and they will literally always have a height advantage. They can gun you down and there’s nothing you can do about it. You can’t return fire because you don’t have a gun and you can’t build because you have no materials. It’s a lose-lose for you.

Don’t land ten seconds behind someone at the same house. Whoever, with exceptions, gets the gun first wins. You really aren’t going to be able to pick-axe a player that has a shotgun. It won’t happen unless they are God-awful and have never heard of a video game in their entire life. If you see that someone is on the roof of your favorite house and just got a gun, do yourself a favor and go elsewhere, even if you just drop to the bottom floor before them. Don’t let them pave your way.

Don’t land in the trees. You’ll sustain fall damage at best and, more than likely, you will take too much damage and die after falling out of them.

Summary

Whew. I went over a lot today with you. I threw a lot of names at ya that you might or might not be familiar with, but here’s the general theme—experiment. Some people like fighting right off the bat. Some people like the short-range of Shifty. Some people like the long-range of Anarchy.

As a rule of thumb, look at your minimap. The biggest names will have the most people. Also, the closer you get to the inside of the circle and the closer the location is to where the Battle Bus is going, the more likely people will go there. Personally, I like to try to head somewhere relatively remote. I pick the edge of the map and move in. I have been shot in the back entirely too many times to casually drop in the middle. I like to skirt the edges and be the one to shoot someone else unsuspecting instead of the other way around.

Short of that, play around. Land wherever you want. You’ll die. You’ll survive. It’ll happen over and over and over again, and soon you’ll know where you like to look and where you can’t stand to land. Your interests will probably change over time, and that’s fine. You do you.

Until next time, get out there and have some fun!
