LoL Hextech Chests are Back Confirmed! Riot Walks Back on Controversial Move

By | February 26th, 2025 | Categories: League of Legends

Riot just walked back on one of their most controversial decisions ever and is bringing back Hextech Chests to League of Legends. The removal of the F2P content was met with heavy backlash from the League community over the weeks, and the company was adamant about its initial decision. However, Riot eventually relented after all the flak they received and announced the return of Hextech Chests in their recent dev talk.

Hextech Chests Return!

In the most recent dev talk, Riot announced they would bring back Hextech Chests as F2P content. However, they were making some alterations to how players could earn them. Instead of getting them via masteries, gamers can now collect them via the Free Track of the Season Battle Pass.

Summoners can collect eight from grinding the free rewards from the BP. Meanwhile, players can also gain two more chests via the Honor System. Gamers also earn free Hextech Keys when they get the chests so they can open them immediately.

Changing how Hextech Chests are earned will make several alterations to the BP. These rewards will now replace several low-tier and seasonal skins; fans prefer it this way. In general, players are happy with the return of their beloved chests.

Riot Relents to Massive Backlash Over Hextech Chests

Riot removed Hextech Chests in January, reasoning that the practice was unsustainable and hurting the company’s ability to profit. This move was met with massive backlash from the community, which had already started seeing Riot negatively, especially after their recent massive layoffs. The removal of F2P content cemented the company as a cash-grabbing entity in their eyes.

Riot initially remained adamant about how they feel about Hextech Chests and reiterated that they won’t be returning. However, players’ feedback against this seems to have forced the studio’s hands. Many fans took to social media platforms like X and Reddit to announce that they were finally quitting the game after years of playing because of Riot’s top management’s greedy practices. It seems that the company’s higher-up finally understood the weight of their decisions and finally relented.
