All Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Changes — What’s New

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered brings more than just graphical changes to the game, as certain gameplay elements have been updated for better exploration and combat experience in Cyrodiil. Whether you’ve played the original Oblivion or not, the remaster has more to offer, which is why we’ll list down what Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered has brought.

Unreal Engine 5 Visual Overhaul

The game has been ported from the old Havok engine to Unreal Engine 5, which drastically overhauled the graphical fidelity of Oblivion. This came with many improvements to lighting, better character models, textures, foliage, and other rendering features.

Better Combat Mechanics and Animations

The original Oblivion’s combat was quite dated by today’s standards, as fights were usually spamming attacks until you or your opponent was dead. Not only that, but hitting the enemy felt floaty and had no indicator of how much damage you dealt. With the remaster, combat has been given an update to feel more impactful, with enemies having hit reactions and more combat sound effects.

You now also have a dedicated dodge button, for whenever you prefer to use a bow or go two-handed. This way, you can still avoid taking damage without relying on a shield.

Updated Leveling System

According to Bethesda, leveling in Oblivion Remastered will be more akin to Skyrim in terms of leveling skills, where simply using them will level them up at the same rate as all other skills. Previously, assigning certain skills as Major and others as Minor affected the rate at which they accumulate experience.

Now, Major skills will instead require less experience to level up, but you will gain experience at the same rate as your Minor or non-specced skills. This makes leveling a lot easier and streamlined.

As for stat increases, you can now control how many points you can allocate to an attribute, though you can only level three different attributes at a time. Enemy level scaling has also been tuned down so that they’re more in line with your level instead of outpacing you.

Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles Now In Base Game

Both the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles were originally paid DLC in the old version of Oblivion, with the former providing a few new questlines while the latter being a full expansion for the game. With the remaster, both are now part of the base game for the standard edition.

Dedicated Sprint

The original Oblivion game forced players to run at a static pace, with movement speed increases being dictated by the Athletics skill. This made exploration very slow and annoying. Now, the remastered version lets you sprint on command.

Improved Third-Person Camera

The camera for Oblivion Remastered has been changed from the overhead, janky angle in the original Oblivion, to the right side angled camera view like Skyrim.

Added Voice Acting

Oblivion Remastered comes with new dialogue from NPCs and some re-recorded audio to enhance the game’s iconic voice acting. This also prevents the overlap of certain NPCs sharing the same voices for better immersion.
