Beloved GTA V: Liberty City Mod Gets Shut Down by Take-Two Interactive, Angering Fans

By | January 15th, 2025 | Categories: GTA V

GTA V Liberty City Preservation Project was one of the most beloved single-player mods for the game as it essentially adds the entire of Liberty City to the game, including landmarks, music, and NPCs that are faithful to GTA IV’s setting. However, in a recent turn of events, Rockstar Games’ partner, Take-Two Interactive, has taken steps to shut down the ongoing mod project. The news has shocked and angered GTA fans who were following the mod, with some expressing their disappointment on social media. Here’s everything we know about the mod and why it got canceled.

Liberty City Preservation Project Mod Features

The mod, which had been in development for over 6 years, aims to bring out the full Liberty City experience, which includes a functioning subway, a full texture remaster, and game-accurate cars and NPCs. The mod was highly ambitious since it was going to feature destructible environments and full interiors into the mod before its cancellation.

Rockstar and Take-Two Axes Project

In the official mod Discord channel, the lead developer, NKJellman, has announced the project’s cancellation, citing that the mod drew the attention of Rockstar and Take-Two. While the developers promised to make more mods for GTA V, the Liberty City Preservation Project has stopped any further development.

NKJellman elaborated that the cancellation was a mutual agreement between the mod team and Rockstar Games, calling it a “friendly takedown, mutually agreed upon by all parties” instead of a cease-and-desist strike. This news came with the deletion of all download links for the mod.

Mod Supporters Rightfully Upset

The GTA community is disappointed by the news, with many expressing their frustrations on X about the project’s cancellation. Many find it highly unusual for Rockstar to take action on the mod, especially since they’ve previously approved single-player mods for their games. The LCPP mod was meant for single-player and didn’t affect GTA Online in any way, yet the studio still took action to cancel it.
