All Civilization 7 Terrain Types Explained

Terrain is an essential factor in building up your resources for Civ 7. Each type of terrain offers different bonuses and can be a factor in gathering lots of resources well into the endgame crisis. Here’s a brief explanation of what each terrain type does and what resources they provide.

All Available Biomes

Biomes provide a bias towards certain terrain tiles, which pave the way towards creating unique tiles that not only provide more resources, but even passive bonuses with World Wonders in certain areas.

Here are all the Biomes that your Civilization can start in:

  • Desert
  • Grassland
  • Plains
  • Tropical
  • Tundra

All Terrain Types and Resources

Each terrain tile in the game comes in four types: Flat, Rough, Vegetated, and Wet. These affect the kinds of resources you can get once you build a structure on it.

The following tiles provide these resources:

  • Flat Tundra: 3 Food
  • Rough Tundra: 3 Production
  • Vegetated Tundra (Taiga): 2 Production and 1 Culture
  • Wet Tundra (Tundra Bog): 1 Food, 2 Production and 1 Culture
  • Flat Grassland: 3 Food
  • Rough Grassland: 1 Food and 2 Production
  • Vegetated Grassland (Forest): 1 Food and 2 Production
  • Wet Grassland (Marsh): 2 Food and 2 Production
  • Flat Desert: 2 Food and 1 Production
  • Rough Desert: 3 Production
  • Vegetated Desert (Sagebrush Steppe): 2 Production and 1 Gold
  • Wet Desert (Oasis): 1 Food, 2 Production and 1 Gold
  • Flat Plains: 2 Food and 1 Production
  • Rough Plains: 3 Production
  • Vegetated Plains (Savanna Woodland): 3 Production
  • Wet Plains (Watering Hole): 1 Food and 3 Production
  • Flat Tropical: 3 Food
  • Rough Tropical: 1 Food and 2 Production
  • Vegetated Tropical (Rainforest): 2 Production and 1 Science
  • Wet Tropical (Mangrove): 1 Food, 2 Production and 1 Science

These special terrain tiles confer bonuses once you settle near them. Finding these is a great way to boost your resource output or synergize with your current city layouts.

    • +2 Science on Adjacent Marine Terrain

    • 6 Food per Age
    • +1 Culture and Production to adjacent Rural tiles
    • Grants Fresh Water
  • Hoerikwaggo
    • +2 Culture and +4 Food per Age
    • +2 Happiness on adjacent Quarters
  • Iguazu Falls
    • +2 Happiness and +4 Food per Age
    • +2 Production on adjacent Quarters
    • Grants Fresh Water
  • Mount Kilimanjaro
    • +2 Production and +4 Happiness per Age
  • Redwood Forest
    • +2 Food, Happiness, and Production per Age
    • +1 Culture and Science on Vegetated Terrain in this Settlement
  • Thera
    • +2 Happiness and +4 Culture per Age
  • Torres Del Paine
    • +2 Food and +4 Happiness per Age
    • Land Units that move next to the Torres del Paine ignore Rough Terrain for the rest of the game
  • Uluru
    • + 6 Happiness per Age
    • +2 Culture on Desert Terrain in this Settlement
  • Valley of Flowers
    • +2 Food, Gold, and Happiness per Age
    • +10 Land trade Route Range to Trade Routes from this Settlement
  • Zhangjiajie
    • +2 Happiness and +4 Production per Age
    • +2 Culture on Rough Terrain in this Settlement
