Best Avowed Background per Class: What to Get for Your Character

By | February 19th, 2025 | Categories: Others

Choosing a Background in Avowed gets your character a head start in the early game, as not only does this open up dialogue options with certain characters, but it also provides a different starting weapon and bonus stats. Here are all the bonuses each background provides so that you can pick the best one for your class.

Arcane Scholar

  • Best class: Wizard
  • +2 Might
  • +2 Perception
  • +3 Intellect
  • Starting weapon: Wand

The Arcane Scholar is a good starting background for Wizard characters, as Might boosts your overall damage while Perception increases your weapon’s critical hit chance. Intellect gives you a good amount of Essence to start so you can cast more spells in the early game.

Vanguard Scout

  • Best class: Ranger
  • +3 Perception
  • +2 Dexterity
  • +1 Constitution
  • Starting weapon: Axe

The Vanguard Scout background pairs well with the Ranger class. Since this class tailors to ranged weapons like arquebuses, bows, and pistols, Perception will allow you to deal massive damage at long range. Dexterity provides a bonus to both your melee attack speed and reload speed, further increasing your DPS. The one point in Constitution keeps you from turning into a full glass cannon.

War Hero

  • Best class: Fighter
  • +3 Might
  • +3 Resolve
  • +2 Constitution
  • Starting weapon: Spear

The Hero provides all the tank stats that Fighters need to stay in the frontline. The Might stat gives Fighters the means to be effective with two-handed weapons, while Resolve increases the overall stamina that Fighters use to block and dodge attacks. Constitution increases the maximum health that the class needs to soak up more damage.

Noble Scion

  • Best class: Wizard/Fighter or Wizard/Ranger
  • +2 Might
  • +2 Perception
  • +2 Dexterity
  • +2 Intellect
  • Starting weapon: Sword

A Noble Scion character has the most versatile stat block in the game, which lets you try a hybrid playstyle of magic, guns, and melee at the same time. With the Noble Scion background, you can cover most damage types except for survivability since this does not provide any bonus health and stamina needed to soak or avoid damage.

While the game has no class restrictions for weapons, having a plan for your build and selecting the right Background and stat allocations gets you a lot further in the game. Whether you prefer min-maxing stats or playing by ear, Avowed lets you pick a Background that gives you the best start.
