Lords of the Fallen: how to upgrade weapons, shields, Umbral Lamp, and Sanguinarix
Fighting Lords of the Fallen bosses will require more than just skill. What some newer players tend to overlook is that they can upgrade their weapons. Bringing their items beyond +0 can make encounters more manageable. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to enhance their things. This guide will show players how to upgrade their weapons.

Upgrading Weapons, Shields, Umbral Lamp, and Sanguinarix
Unlike some games, Lords of the Fallen only allows players to upgrade their Weapons and Shields. Boosting your melee and ranged items can significantly increase their offensive power. The only way to increase your gear’s defensive stats is to enhance your shields if you use one. However, if you use two-handed items, your options are limited to using weapons.
Every weapon in Lord of the Fallen can be upgraded. You can bring your items up to +10 except for boss drops, which you can only bring up to +5. In addition, accessories like the Umbral Lamp and Sanguinarix can also be upgraded. Enhancing these accessories will increase their effectiveness and also provide additional abilities.
How Do you Upgrade Your Weapons and Items?
Enhancing your equipment is simple because you must bring the necessary materials to the suitable NPCs. These characters are primarily located in SKyrest and have various conditions you need to meet before you can use their services. Here are the appropriate NPCs for each category:
- Gerlinde the Blacksmith (room on the right side of the Skyrest Vestige) – Weapons and Shields
- Molhu (room on the western section of the Skyrest Vestige) – Umbral Lamp
- Pieta (right next to the Skyrest Vestige on the left side) – Sanguinarix
For Gerlinde, you have to free her from her prison cell in Pilgrim’s Perch before you can start upgrading items. Molhu requires you to be in the Umbral Realm when interacting with him to boost the lamp. Pieta won’t have any special requirements for you to use her services.
Upon interacting with these characters, you must exhaust all their dialogue options before they open up shop. Afterward, you must have the appropriate materials to enhance the targeted items. Each category requires different materials, which you can find throughout your adventures.
Upgrading Weapons and Shields
You will be spending most of your time upgrading weapons above all. Weapon power will dictate how effective you will be against enemies and bosses. Enhancing them all increases their scaling capabilities and runes slots. To increase the power level of these items, you need to bring the following materials to Gerlinde:
- Small Deralium Fragment – 0 to +3
- Regular Deralium Nuggets – 0 to +5
- Large Deralium Shards – 0 to +9
- Deralium Chunk – 0 to +10
Note: Swords, daggers, hammers, bows, crossbows, catalysts, and shields all require the same material.
Deralium can mainly obtained by defeating enemies and bosses. Early on, killing Fire Sword Pirates in the Burning City of Crath will provide the most Regular Deralium Nuggets. Once you get to the later stages, farming Holy Bulwark Enemies in the Chamber of Lies for Large Delarium Shards is the most optimal method for gaining more of this material. However, if you don’t mind an extra challenge, consider grinding the boss Adyr because he drops the greatest number of Delarium.
Boss weapons do not require any unique materials to be upgraded, so you only need to use Delarium to enhance them. However, players should remember that they can only bring these items to +5. While they can only be leveled up to this rank, they can still easily compete with other weapons that are maxed out. If you aren’t sure what items can be upgraded to level 10 or not, here are all the boss weapons in the game:
- Saint Latimer’s Relic Spear
- Hushed Saint’s Halberd
- Adyr’s Greatsword
- The Eidolon
- The Hammer of Mercy
- The Twin Blades of the Wanderer
- The Staff of Ages
- The Sickle of Destruction
- The Greatsword of the Damned
- The Axe of the Executioner
- The Bow of the Falcon
Aside from upgrading weapons, you can also slot runes into their sockets. These unique stones can grant them new abilities to help them in any battle. Gerlinde is your first source for getting runes, but gamers can get better ones later during their explorations. However, it is highly advisable to use what the Blacksmith has to offer most of the time. Here are the runes you can equip to your weapons:
- Runic Stone of Force – increase weapon damage by 10%
- Runic Stone of Protection – gain 5% damage mitigation
- Runic Stone of Poison – poison enemies on hit
- Runic Stone of Stun – stun enemies on hit
- Runic Stone of Life Steal – recover HP every time you deal damage to enemies
- Runic Stone of mana Leech – restore mana every time you deal damage to enemies
- Runic Stone of Critical Hit Chance – increase critical hit chance
- Runic Stone of Critical Hit Damage – increase critical strike damage
- Runic Stone of Attack Speed – increase weapon attack speed
- Runic Stone of Movement Speed – increase movement speed
- Runic Stone of Stamina Regeneration – increase the stamina regeneration rate
Note: Most Lords of the Fallen weapons only have two rune slots. However, there are several that have three as their max.
Upgrading Umbral Lamp
The Umbral Lamp is one of the most valuable tools in the Lords of the Fallen. It has various applications, like entering the Umbral Realm, clearing certain obstacles, and other combat purposes. Most players need to realize that they can also upgrade this unique item.
While in the Umbral Realm, players can interact with Molhu to upgrade their lamps using Antediluvian Chisels. You can only upgrade the Umbral Lamp twice, so you only need two chisels. Enhancing this item will allow you to increase your Soul Flay charges Umbral Eyes sockets and provide new abilities. Aside from this, players also gain more resistance to Dredge, which can make exploring the Umbreal Realm more bearable.
The Antediluvian Chisels can be found in three locations. Players should remember that they can only be collected in the Umbral Realm, so interact with the Lantern Statues when looking for them. Here are the locations of each chisel:
- In the Lower Calrath Alehouse, in the same room where you find the Vestige of Lydia the Numb Witch
- In the Redcopse Windmill, in the same room where you can find the Vestige of Marco the Axe
- In the Hallowed Brothers Leprosarium in the same room where you can find the Kitchen Seedling
One significant aspect of upgrading the Umbral Lamp is that it increases its Umbral Eyes slot. This item already has one slot unlocked, and increasing its level will open up a secondary space. Here are the various eyes you can put into these sockets:
- Eye of the Firebrand – increase the damage of Soul Flay Attacks
- Eye of the Warder – improve damage mitigation from Dread Attacks
- Eye of the Umbra – conjure a spectral companion to fight with you
- Eye of the Guardian – conjure a protective dome
- Eye of the Soulseeker – increase the range of Soul Flay Attacks
Upgrading Sanguinarix
Sanguiaranix is another crucial item that will provide significant benefits when maxed out. Increasing your recovery abilities can help you stay in fights for longer and ensure success. While upgrading the Sanguinarix is very simple, acquiring the materials requires effort. Each level will increase the healing effectiveness and charges.
To upgrade Sanguinarix, you need to bring Saintly Quintessence to Pieta. You can enhance it five times, requiring at least one ingredient each time. These materials are commonly found in the Umbral Realm, so upgrading your lamp beforehand will also be a good idea. Here are the locations of the Saintly Quintessence:
- In the Defiled Sepulchre, after defeating the Corrupted Penitent enemies during the tutorial. Using Soulflay on the Umbral Belly stuck to the wall will show the Saintly Quintessence.
- In Pilgrim’s Perch, in the same room where you fight Scourge Sister Delyth
- In Kinrangr Fief, use your Umbral Lamp to pull the mobile platform after fighting the miniboss. It will be below the small nook after jumping down.
- In the Chamber of Lies, in the same room as the Vestige of Marco the Axe
- In Redcopse Windmill, in the same room as the Vestige of Lydia, the Numb Witch
- In the Hallowed Brothers Leprosarium in the same room as the Kitchen Seedling
- In Skyrest Bridge, in the same room as the Vestige of Adyr
- In Lower Calrath Alehouse is in the same room as the Vestige of Lydia the Numb Witch while in the Umbral Realm.
- In Ashborn’s Fortress, in the same room as the Vestige of Adyr, while in the Umbral Realm
- In Withered Crypt in the same room as the Vestige of Marco the Axe while in the Umbral realm
- In the Hallowed Brothers’ tomb in the same room as the Kitchen Seedling while in the Umbral Realm
Which One to Upgrade First?
Ideally, you should focus more on weapons above all. All players will benefit significantly from enhancing their offensive items, regardless of skill level. The next one on your priority list should be the Umbral Lamp because it gives you access to more abilities and makes traversing the realm easier. While the Sanguinarix is still essential, you would only focus on this if you have difficulty surviving many encounters.
