What are MMORPG Expansion Patches?
Anyone with so much as a passing familiarity with an MMORPG released in the last ten years should have heard the term “expansion” at some point or another. When used in conjunction with any type of video game, an MMORPG Expansion (alternatively known as an expansion patch or expansion pack) is an official add-on for a game which has already been released to the public, and can introduce things such as additional weapons, characters, items, areas to explore, and supplementary storylines. But what can this mean for the player?
Expansions rarely have any major impact on the original game they are created for. The latter of which is often changed through patches or ordinary content updates entirely separated from the expansion itself. In most cases, players must also have to pay separately for an expansion and own a copy of the original game for the expansion to work. Although stand-alone expansions were fairly common for PC games in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Most items or weapons from an expansion can be used in the main game and vice-versa.

While this can mean a significantly lower price for thrifty buyers. It can also make it more difficult for developers to patch or update if anything goes wrong in the process.[/ezcol_2third] [ezcol_1third_end]
MMORPG Expansions can significantly increase the lifespan of a game and open up brand new worlds for players to explore. While some might view them as shameless cash-grabs. Some expansions can mean life or death for a game. It also considers how popular they became amongst MMORPG enthusiasts over the past decade. It is unlikely that they will be going away any time soon.
