By the end, it’s revealed that Lumiere is simply a world created on a canvas using the powers of the Painters. Maelle is a Painter named Alicia, who had her identity replaced by the former due to her mother Aline’s influence. After Alicia and Verso banish Aline (The Paintress) and convince their father, Renoir, to let them decide the fate of the canvas, the two are locked in a power struggle that ultimately ends in one final fight.
Alicia wants to stay on the canvas to rebuild Lumiere and revive its residents, while Verso wants to banish Alicia. You’ll have to choose between the two of them, and you’ll have to defeat the other to bring out your chosen ending. Your choice will decide the fate of the canvas,
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Ending Choices
Depending on who you pick, you’ll enter a final battle as either Alicia or Verso. Whichever you pick, it will result in the eventual or immediate death of one of them. Here are all the outcomes depending on your choice:
- Side with Alicia: Siding with Alicia and defeating Verso ends with the former staying on the canvas and rebuilding Lumiere against the latter’s wishes. This choice will eventually result in Alicia’s death.
- Side with Verso: Siding with Verso and defeating Alicia results in the latter’s banishment from the canvas. After ejecting Alicia, Verso destroys the canvas to prevent anyone from the family from ever returning, which immediately results in his death. Doing so will force the Painters to come to terms with his real death finally.
The final ending does leave some questions unanswered, such as the war between the Painters and Writers. Alicia was initially sent to retrieve Aline so that they could focus on their battle with the latter faction. It’s unclear who these people are, so it’s likely a setup for future sequels.
