Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Is Gustave Dead (SPOILERS)

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 greets players with tragedy early on, as most members of the Expedition are killed right off the bat. The remaining heroes travel on in their quest to defeat the Paintress, with Gustave taking the central spotlight of the party. However, tragedy strikes again when our supposed main protagonist is struck down by the white-haired man, Renoir, which leaves many wondering if Gustave is actually dead.
Renoir Stabs Gustave
During Act 1, the party prepares to set sail for another part of the continent after Esquie learns his swim ability. While Maelle and Gustave have one of their heart-to-heart talks, the latter is suddenly hit by a piercing blow to his abdomen. The blow came from Renoir, and the two have one final epic duel while Maelle can only helplessly watch.
No matter what the players do, Gustave will ultimately perish at the hands of Renoir as the latter delivers another blow that kills the former. At this point, players are waiting for any Deus Ex Machina moment that will either save Gustave or revive him. Unfortunately, this moment seems to have a permanent effect on the story.
Gustave is Dead (Permanent)
Gustave’s death is a permanent thing, which is surprising for almost everyone. He is styled to be the main protagonist from the beginning because he has the most screen time and best relationship with the rest of the party, making him the best candidate to be killed. For those hoping Gustave will be revived later in the story, he won’t.
After his death, the story POV shifts towards Maelle and Verso as they become the central figures of the game. Gustave remains dead throughout Acts 2 and 3, so there is no reviving him. However, one of the endings does see him resurrected along with others from most expeditions.
