Jagex Suspends RuneScape MTX for 3-Month Anti-MTX Experiment

Jagex made a surprising move to suspend all MTX in RuneScape 3 and implement a 3-month long anti-MTX experiment. Developers will impose several restrictions on microtransaction features and gather feedback for future improvements. These changes are temporary, but they’ll be used as a stepping stone for how Jagex will tackle the RuneScape 3 MTX issue.

What’s the 3-Month Anti-MTX Experiment
Jagex will roll out an update that will suspend several key MTX features in RuneScape 3. Those who have items related to these suspended content will be compensated in other ways. Here are the expected changes that will occur during the experimental period:
- Treasure Hunter Disabled: Treasure Hunter will be turned off, and Stars and Knowledge Bombs will be offered for direct purchases in exchange.
- DXP Event Restrictions: Proteans, Dummies, Lamps, and other skilling items will be disabled.
- Cosmetic Mega Drop: Past Cosmetic Override will be offered in extensive selections for direct purchase.
Additional experimental changes will be made based on feedback and development roadmaps. The most anticipated one is the Cosmetic-Free World, but it doesn’t have a specific release date yet. However, devs estimate that it will arrive in August.
Why Did Jagex Suspend Runescape 3 MTX
Microtransactions have been a hot topic in the RS3 community for many years, and many attributed the game’s decline to predatory practice. The game has bordered on P2W practices on several occasions, which have received significant backlash from fans. The dwindling playerbase might have forced Jagex’s hand to make drastic actions and changes regarding their MTX approach. Hopefully, this experimental phase will help revitalize the interest in RuneScape 3.
