What are Rank Shields
Rank Shields protect players from ranking down in their standings after a loss. So, when players lose a Competitive match, instead of going back to Bronze, they can play another match to regain their points and remain in their current rank.
How do Rank Shields Work
Here’s how Valorant has implemented Rank Shields into Competitive Mode.
- Players are given two Rank Shields while in Tier 1 of all ranks except Radiant (Example: Bronze 1, Silver 1, Gold 1, Platinum 1, Ascendant 1)
- One shield is used when players lose a match and reach 0 RR.
- Players who lose three games at 0 RR will be demoted to the lower rank. (Example: Silver 1 to Bronze 3)
- Players will get their shields replenished if they’re demoted or promoted from Tier 1.
- Winning a match at 0 RR will not replenish the shields.

The new Rank Shields mechanics are easy to understand. Players need to win a few matches to get back into their ranks, and if they lose multiple times, they’ll get demoted.
Release Date of Rank Shields
Rank Shields will be added to Valorant when Patch 10.01 comes out. Expect the new patch to launch on January 22, 2025.
