WoW The War Within Confirms Khadgar’s Fate and Another
Khadgar’s Fate in the latest expansion has been a source of debate amongst players after he seemingly died during the opening sequences of The War Within. Despite the massive destruction wrought upon Dalaran by Xal’atath, fans weren’t convinced that the Leader of the Kirin Tor would meet his demise in such a way. While players waited weeks for official confirmations about Khadgar’s death, the last campaign for max level in The War Within finally reveals what happened to the Dalaran Mage.

Khadgar’s Apparent Death During Dalaran’s Destruction
At the beginning of The War Within, Dalaran was teleported to Khaz Algar to serve as a base of operations for the magi in the region. Unfortunately, Xal’atath orchestrated an attack on the city after it changed locations. While her Nerubians wreaked havoc within Dalaran, the Blade of the Black Empire had a showdown with Khadgar before promptly being interrupted by Alleria Windrunner.
While the pair failed to stop Xal’atath from unleashing a spell that disintegrated much of the city, it seemed that Khadgar also died during this sequence. However, while we saw Dalaran’s destruction, we never actually saw the Leader of the Kirin Tor disintegrate along with it. On top of this, some data miners leaked a picture of an empty wheelchair that seems to refer to Khadgar, which would suggest that he’s still alive but severely injured.

Khadgar is Alive but Paralyzed
With the release of Season 1, we also get the last cutscene for the current chapter, and it confirms the fate of our favorite Kirin Tor mage. During the last mission of the campaign, Alleria faces off against Xal’atath after she absorbs shadow energy from Beledar using the Dark Heart. In the final cinematic, the Windrunner fires a well-placed arrow at the artifact, forcing the agent of the Black Empire to retreat as the item releases energy from its cracked vessel.
After Xal’atath leaves, Khadgar apparates in front of Alleria in a severely weakened state. He almost dies due to the trauma, but Anduin was able to call on the Light once more and revive the mage. This finally establishes that Khadgar is alive and well and still has a role to play in the newest expansion.
In the following narration, Khadgar reveals that he was able to survive the destruction of Dalaran by transforming into pure energy before Xal’atath’s spell took effect, but he was subsequently absorbed by the Dark Heart. His time within the artifact took a toll on him, almost killing him before he was finally able to become corporeal again.
While he did survive the whole ordeal, the struggle left lasting damage, leaving him now confined to a wheelchair. The datamined wheelchair accurately predicted that Khadgar is alive, but unable to walk for the time being. It’s unclear if he’ll be able to recover from his injury, or if it’ll become a permanent thing that’ll carry on into the future.
TWW Reveals the Fate of Another
Aside from Khadgar, the last campaign also reveals the fate of another person who we thought died: Queen Neferess. In the opening cinematic, the former Nerubian Queen was seemingly killed by her daughter Ansurek, so she could assume control of the Nerubian Empire under the influence of Xal’atath. We never see any clues about Neferess after being stabbed and left for dead by the new empress of the insectoid kingdom.
The last MSQ for this chapter reveals that Neferess is also alive, but she’s been forcibly transformed into an Ascended Monstrosity by Ansurek. She serves as a mini boss of the first raid in the expansion, and we’ll incapacitate her after Xal’atath seizes her mind and forces her to fight us. She’s still alive after the fight with the adventurers, which might suggest a future wherein we can restore her to her former state.
Most players believed that Neferess was already dead before the start of the expansion, but many were confused on why she was titled as the First Ascended. By all accounts, this title should’ve been a mistake since the former Nerubian Queen rejected the use of the Blood of the Old Gods. However, it was later revealed that after Ansurek stabbed her, she experimented on her mother to refine the process of ascending before using it on her soldiers. The name itself is a mockery of what happened to Neferess rather than actual official recognition.
An epilogue will be available after the release of Nerub-ar Palace raid, and we’ll have to wait for the subsequent chapter for the next major patch. The last sequences of this part might wrap up what happens to the Nerubians after we defeat Queen Ansurek during the Nerub-ar Palace raid. Fortunately, our hands will be full farming new gear and collectibles from M+ raids to keep us busy.
