Scourge League: Blood Crucible Guide

The brand-new Path of Exile patch: 3.16 Scourge, brings a whole new game mechanic to the table. PoE Scourge is one of the most hyped patches we’ve seen in a good while and with good reason too! Scourge is the Path of Exile patch that was launched on 22nd October 2021 for PC and Mac followed by Xbox and PlayStation just five days later on 27th October 2021.

In Path of Exile: Scourge you can upgrade items such as any Weapon, Off-hand, Armor, or Jewelry by simply placing it into the Blood Crucible, which you must then fill with the blood of your enemies as you slay them! The blood vial will be displayed in the top right corner of your screen when you start attacking monsters. The bar is in two parts and you must fill at least half before you can shift into the alternative realm of Wraeclast. I do recommend filling it fully to get the most out of it, as it will deplete like a timer when you shift. Once you have enough blood you can then shift into the alternate Apocalyptic Wraeclast where you will fight raging demonic monsters in a realm that looks like hell itself has opened up. To shift in to this alternative Wraeclast simply press the (v) key by default on your keyboard. Xbox and PlayStation controls will be different to PC and Mac. Just go ahead and check in your controller / input options if you’re unsure. It should be under “League Interface”.

To access and open the Blood Crucible panel to scourge an item simply press either the (`) key by default; Or (#) on a UK, English Keyboard. Alternatively, you can open your inventory using the (i) key and click the “Open Blood Crucible” button left of your characters gloves slot.

Inside the Blood Crucible UI panel there will be two tabs at the top; Crucible and Skills. On the Crucible tab you will see an empty box and a transform button. You simply place an item into the empty box on the Crucible Tab in order to prepare it for scourging. You can then close the Blood Crucible panel and the item will remain inside. It is now ready for the scourge process to begin.

The second tab which is labelled Skills are skill points that you can allocate as you fight in the alternative Wraeclast event realm. You get skill points while fighting in the alternative realm.

The first row of skills allows you to absorb more corruption on specific items such as Jewelry, Armor, Weapons and Quivers. Below that you have a skill which will allow you to transform and scourge unique items too! You will need 10 skill points allocated above, before you can distribute a point into this. Moving on from there the rest is pretty much self-explanatory. Just simply mouse over each skill inside the Blood Crucible to see what each one does, and of course what requirements you need to fulfil (if any) before you can allocate that particular scourge skill.

Unique items in PoE 3.16 Scourge

Get four, yes four, Implicit Scourge mods. Two of them will be negative and two of them will be positive. Other than that, it seems all other items will get two implicit scourge stat modifiers; one bad and one good.

As you defeat the monsters in the Apocalyptic Event Realm (providing you have already socketed / placed an item into the Blood Crucible) then the item will absorb corruption as you kill mobs. You can see the amount of Corruption Absorbed at any time by simply hovering over the item itself.

When the item has absorbed enough corruption and it is full you can then click the transform button below the item itself inside of the Blood Crucible. By transforming the item, you are now scourging it. Upon an item being scourged it will become ‘Corrupted’. Scourge Tier 1 is the first tier and has no item level (iLevel) requirement at all.

Once an item has been scourged you will gain two orange implicit stats / item modifiers. One of them will be a positive stat (aka Beneficial Modifier) and the other will be a negative stat (aka Detrimental Modifier). For example, you could get +30 to Evasion Rating and -15% to Chaos Resistance. Or you could get -29 To Maximum Life and +20 to Lightning Resistance, and so on! There are an insane number of possibilities! What you get is of course completely random as with all item and stat rolls in Path of Exile. Of course, as mentioned above; Unique items gain four modifiers.

Now if you scourge an item and you don’t get what you want the first time round then don’t worry the item isn’t necessarily ruined! You can actually re-scourge an item into Scourge Tier 2 and even Scourge Tier 3. But there is an iLevel aka Item Level requirement for this to be possible.

So, once you’ve scourged an item for the first time then if the item is iLevel 44 or below then it can’t be scourged again. You are stuck with it I’m afraid.

How to Re-Roll an item to Scourge Tier 2

If the item level is iLevel 45 or above, then good news! You can scourge the item again in the Blood Crucible to re-roll the scourge implicit stats / modifiers.

Upon scourging an item for the second time it then becomes Tier 2 Scourge. The item then gets a new pair of implicit modifiers; one good and one bad.

You still didn’t get the result you wanted the 2nd time round? Don’t worry, you can scourge again! Yes you heard correctly; Tier 3 is possible!

How to Re-Roll an Item to Scourge Tier 3

If the item level is iLevel 68 or above then you will be able to scourge the item for a third time by simply placing it back into the Blood Crucible and slaying even more monsters in the alternative Wraeclast dimension! When the item is then full again it will be ready for you to simply click ‘Transform’ again. Now your item will become a Tier 3 scourged item. You will then get a new set of implicit scourge mods again.

If you haven’t got what you wanted this time around, then that’s it. Unfortunately, there is no way currently to re-scourge or roll it again once your scourged item has been scourged 3 times and become Scourge Tier 3.

With the new Path of Exile 3.16 Scourge League there has also been a new addition of orb currencies known as Tainted Currency. You are able to get the following new Tainted Currency.

  • Tainted Chromatic Orb
  • Tainted Orb of Fusing
  • Tainted Jeweller’s Orb
  • Tainted Chaos Orb
  • Tainted Exalted Orb
  • Tainted Mythic Orb
  • Tainted Armourer’s Scrap
  • Tainted Blacksmith’s Whetstone
  • Tainted Divine Teardrop
  • Tainted Blessing

The tainted currency can be used to modify corrupted items.

That’s all for now and I hope you found this Path of Exile 3.16 Scourge Upgrading guide helpful!
