Lethal Company has attracted over 100,000 concurrent players and is the latest craze among horror enthusiasts. The game casts you as a member of a scrap salvage crew. Along with other players, you and the rest of the team work for a faceless Weyland Yutani-style corporation.

The end of a playthrough varies from game to game. Having a New Game+ (NG+) is much more common nowadays, as it lets you redo your past fights or uncover secrets you previously didn’t see. However, in the case of a horror co-op genre like Lethal Company, do the tasks ever end?

It Never Ends

Lethal Company is built on the concept of gathering valuable loot and exploring moons. At the end of it all, you must offload everything to the company. The horror-roguelike has many worlds chock full of strange and terrifying creatures. You’d think that at the end of the day, after completing the quota, you’d get some sort of happy ending in Lethal Company, but that’s not the case.

Developer Zeekerrs stated that Lethal Company is being developed to have enough maps, creature variety, and content to be infinitely replayable. In other words, there’s no ending to the game. Since each run can be different than the other—both in terms of what creatures you’ll encounter or how high your quota will be—there’s technically no need for closure in the first place. Plus, the semi-procedural generation jumbles up the interiors of buildings and dictates that each run will be different.

At its current state, Lethal Company offers a continuous experience that’s meant to be played in a loop. You select a moon, go and explore that area, and try to meet your quota. Everything about the game ends once your character dies. At that point, you’ll automatically reset to the original starting point.

Progression in Lethal Company

Considering that Lethal Company is a roguelike, your progress in a playthrough isn’t permanent. The main goal is to get a good run until you run out of steam. Once you do, you’ll restart with a new set of challenges. There are still some elements that the game does save to across runs, such as:

  • Bestiary Logs
  • Your rank in the company
  • Any purchased cosmetics

These are the only things that give you a theoretical endpoint to work toward. Earning the final boss rank or completing your Bestiary log are some of the things that are worth accomplishing. With that in mind, the community in Lethal Company has been requesting more ways to have meaningful character progression.

Will Lethal Company Get An Ending Soon?

Lethal Company is still in early access, but the developers plan to finish the game over the next six months. Since Zeekerrs value player feedback, the title’s gameplay loop may get a few changes. For example, there’s a possibility that it might get an ending or a more focused story mode, but that’s based on what the devs decide to add as they continue to turn Lethal Company into a finished product.

You could argue that Lethal Company has much more content than the other early access games, but its library has already been done to death and quickly explored. The interiors, most notably, can be repetitive to walk through after a while. The exteriors on all the maps also appear to be the same whenever you visit, with only the buildings and facilities changing from run to run.

For now, the game’s premise is akin to Hardspace: Shipbreaker’s, but instead of being able to fight back against the corporation, you just work yourself to the bone until your character dies. So no—there’s no ending where you storm the HQ or run off to a moon where the system can’t find you.

At least for those who get the post-game blue whenever the credits roll, Lethal Company is the perfect title since it keeps the fun rolling. Keep scavenging to your heart’s content or until you get a heart attack in the game and become a company write-off. If you want to put off that ending as much as possible, you can bring your pals for a multiplayer session. Just don’t blame us if you all get into a heated argument, though.
