Monster Hunter World Clutch Claw Guide

Monster Hunter World Clutch Claw
By | April 24th, 2024 | Categories: Monster Hunter

Monster Hunter World Iceborne didn’t just introduce new maps; it also came with a new mechanic we haven’t seen anywhere else in the franchise. Enter the Clutch Claw—a device that allows hunters to tussle with a monster at any time and perform a series of actions. As a supplement to the Sling, you can only get the Clutch Claw if you have the Iceborne expansion.

Using the Clutch Claw is quite simple, but for those hoping to master it, it can get a bit more involved. In this guide, we’ll show you how to use and unlock this item.

How to Get Clutch Claw in Monster Hunter World

To get the Clutch Claw, talk to the Smithy to unlock an Arena quest called ‘Learning the Clutch.’ Then, go to a Quest Board or talk with the Handler and check the Optional Missions to select the quest. All you need to do from there is to beat the Great Jagras several times using certain Clutch Claw techniques. Don’t worry about messing up since the quest won’t progress until you’ve used the correct move. After completing the mission, you can use the Clutch Claw in combat!

How to Use the Clutch Claw in MHW Iceborne

Using the Clutch Claw is similar to the Sling. Here are the default controls for every platform.

Flinch ShotMB4R2RT

When it comes down to it, you’ll want to use the Claw Shot (L2/LT + Circle) when targeting the monster’s face. Then, using Claw Attack, you can change its direction. Depending on what type of ammo you have equipped on your Sling, you can send the monster flying into a trap, wall, or other obstacle so it falls and takes massive damage. You’ll need to do this before running out of stamina.

Claw Attack, Weapon Attack, Flinch Shot

Once you’re on top of a monster after using the Claw Attack, you can choose what to do next. You can use a Claw Attack, perform a Weapon Attack, or use the Flinch Shot, which uses up all your Slinger Ammo.

MH World Clutch Claw: Claw Attacks

Claw Attacks can be done by pressing LMB/B/О when you’re grappled onto a monster. Once you’re on the monster’s head, the Claw Attack can cause the monster to change the direction it’s facing. Basically, it should be used in conjunction with the Flinch Shot.

MH World Iceborne: How to Do Weapon Attacks Using Clutch Claw

When clutched onto a monster, Weapon Attacks can be performed using the RMB/Y/△ button. This can do different things, depending on what weapon you’re using. Using Technical or Light weapons will cause monsters to drop Slinger Ammo. After attacking the same part, you’ll start to wound the monster. On the other hand, Heavy weapons can only wound a monster’s part.

Here are the weapons that can be used to drop Slinger Ammo:

  • Dual Blades
  • Sword and Shield
  • Light Bowgun
  • Bow
  • Gunlance
  • Long Sword
  • Insect Glaive

And here are the Heavy weapons that can automatically wound monsters:

  • Great Sword
  • Hunting Horn
  • Hammer
  • Heavy Bowgun
  • Lance
  • Switch Axe
  • Charge Blade

The key is to wound as often as you can. You’ll be less likely to deflect when attacking a tenderized part and do more damage, so it’s best to target breakable parts since the effect is temporary. Wounding is especially vital when utilizing Weakness Exploit since it’s a skill that only goes into effect against wounded parts.

You can tell when a part is wounded if it has a messed up appearance and pointy marks appear when attacking it.

Take the Monster By the Helm Using Fling Shots

To use Fling Shots, press the MB4/R2/RT button. And much like the Claw Attack, it’s best done when you’re on the monster’s head. Triggering a Fling Shot causes the monster to rush forward in the direction it’s facing. If it hits another monster, a wall, or a cliff, it’ll take tons of damage and be knocked down. Once you’ve dismounted, you can do all your weapon combos until it gets back up.

If done correctly, you can expect to deal up to 1,000+ damage. Before attempting this, check if you have any Slinger Ammo in your pouch.

Getting the Hang of It

Knowing when and which move to use will come with experience. Lucky for you, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne has easy quests you can do to get the hang of it. Head to any Quest Board and select Low Rank/High Rank quests that are safe enough to complete without trouble.
