Half-Life 2’s 20th Anniversary Big Update: Everything You Need to Know
Valve is celebrating Half-Life 2’s 20th Anniversary with a massive update ranging from QoL updates to additional features. The devs also provide additional commentaries discussing events throughout the years. Well, what should we expect from this update?
Table of Contents
100% Sale from the Get-Go
Half-Life 2 goes on sale 100% on Steam, which means everyone can virtually get it for free. The game already includes Episodes 1 and 2 alongside the base version. Unfortunately, this update doesn’t include the lost and canceled Episode 3. It was never revealed why the supposed last entry of the trilogy was canceled or what it contained, but we’re getting some answers with this new update.
Half-Life 2 Dev Commentary and Documentary
The developers’ commentary is one of the most anticipated parts of the update. The footage features an explanation of what happened to Episode 3. In addition, the dev team will provide a commentary on the base itself, which initially didn’t have one, unlike Episodes 1 and 2. The documentary will also provide behind-the-scenes regarding the game’s development, including moments of the infamous lawsuit and almost going bankrupt.
Steam Workshop Support Integration
Previously, you had to close the game to install user-created content for Half-Life 2, which included mods and other plug-ins. Devs finally introduced an Extras menu so players can integrate Steam Workshop projects in-game. Valve encourages modding and other user-based adjustments, especially in its games. The only catch is that any mod must strictly adhere to guidelines and ToS.
Steam Game Recording Integration
Another feature added to the 20th Anniversary is the Steam Game Recording. This wasn’t available in previous versions, so it’s a good time for players to make new memories in City 17 and record them. They can access this via the Steam Overlay for event markers and share them with others.
Other Graphic Updates, Bug Fixes, and Steam Deck Optimization
Other changes from the update include optimizing the game’s texture and fixing several bugs and glitches. The game also receives better high-quality mode with increased lightmap shadows and shader details. Steam Deck also receives massive optimizations as aim assist becomes easier to use, and the gamepad controls have been updated to be more compatible with the anniversary update.
