Pokemon SV Exclusives

In true Pokemon tradition, each generation has at least two games. While fundamentally the same, the primary difference between the two is that specific Pokemon can only be caught in one version and not the other. The idea is to go out and meet other players so you can trade those exclusives with each other.

The most obvious example is the featured box legendary of the game. You can catch the legendary on your version, but for the other, you’d have to trade to get it. It’s no different for Scarlet and Violet. Here are the unique things in each version of Generation IX of Pokemon.

Other Exclusives

The Pokemon Professor for Violet is Professor Turo, who’s wearing something quite futuristic. The school is also different. It’s the Uva Academy this time. Again, these aren’t accessible to players of the opposite version.

Version Exclusives and the Union Circle

Generation IX provides a different mechanic for obtaining version exclusives. Before, the only way was to trade with a friend or on the GTS. Now they only need to join a Union Circle (up to 4 players only). When trainers sync up with a friend who has the opposite edition from theirs, the other game’s version exclusives can appear in their world!

However, note that trading still has uses for evolving Pokemon or obtaining one for the Masuda Method of finding shinies.

Other Union Circle Mechanics

#1 Raiding Together

You can raid with friends using the host’s Tera Raid Crystals. If you’re not the host, you can still get League Points (LP) and Tera Orb charges, but you can’t start a raid. When going raiding, the invitation won’t be sent if the other players are busy (in a cutscene, battle, or busy with other things). Make sure everyone’s ready before starting a raid!

#2 Mass Outbreaks

You can participate in this feature only for the host’s outbreaks. Talk among your friends to see who the best host for this could be. It’s a great chance to find shiny Pokemon!

#3 You Can Do the Story Tasks

Battling gym leaders, Titan Pokemon, or the different divisions of Team Star is possible. It also counts toward your progress. However, your friends can’t help you with those battles, and you must do them alone. The group gets notifications of the different activities each of the members does.

#4 You Can Pick Up Items

Don’t worry; you’re not stealing your friend’s items when you pick something up from the wild. You can even tell the group where you found a rare thing, and they can all go to the spot to pick it up.

#5 Fast Travel

In other games, you can’t fast-travel to a spot the host hasn’t been to yet. You can in Pokemon SV if you’ve unlocked it for your game.

#6 Doing Things Together

Picnics, selfies, trading, and battles are all available in a Union Circle. Doing things together makes the game better, so take advantage of it!

*Note About Armarouge and Ceruledge

Charcadet is not a version exclusive and is available to both games. However, the item required to evolve them is. Pokemon Scarlet owners can obtain the armor to develop Charcadet into Armarogue. Trainers on the other edition have the one for Ceruledge.

Even in the Union Circle with a friend on the opposite version, you cannot buy or obtain the other edition’s evolutionary item. You can trade Charcadets (or any other Pokemon) holding the thing so it can be used in the other game.

Additional Information on Pokemon SV Multiplayer

You must have access to the internet to connect with players who aren’t nearby, which also requires a subscription to Nintendo Online. Otherwise, connecting to a friend’s Switch using local wireless is possible. The latter would need proximity to the other device, though.

The Union Circle is not drop-in, drop-out. You can’t leave and then rejoin the same group you left. The host would have to create a new session to let you return. Fortunately, disconnections won’t end the session unless the host experiences it.

If you’re hunting for shiny Pokemon, anybody in the group can find shinies. Others would also see it as one. However, only one trainer can catch it. Some players have found, though, that you can technically duplicate it. When you save in front of the Pokemon in question (don’t let it de-spawn!), it will still be there if you load it.

Say the host trainer saves in front of the shiny and then lets their friend catch it. The host doesn’t save the game, but their friend does. When they reset, the shiny would still be there with the host, and the friend also has it on their box. This may be patched out in later versions.

Whether you’re playing Scarlet or Violet, exclusives aren’t a problem. Playing with a friend on the opposite version will help immensely with the collection for the Pokedex. Otherwise, there’s always the tried and tested way of trading with others. Whatever the problem, there’s always a method.

The game’s new multiplayer features also bring a new dimension to your adventures. With your friends by your side, there’s always something new around the corner.
