Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Sandwich Guide

One of the many concepts Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduced to the franchise for the first time is sandwiches. Sandwiches are part of the game’s feature, allowing you to feed your party Pokemon from anywhere except in cities and towns. Following the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield, the concept of letting players camp with their Pokemon in the overworld continues to be passed down. Game Freak decided to opt for picnic sessions this time instead of camping. Much like camping, picnics are an excellent way for you to increase the happiness/friendship of your Pokemon. And most importantly, it’s where you can try your hand at crafting sandwiches. These sandwiches can be fed to your Pokemon, restoring their PP, HP, and status conditions.

You’d think we’d stop there, but sandwiches are more than that. Besides healing your Pokemon, they can yield several benefits. By combining all sorts of unique toppings, flavors, and condiments into your hand-crafted sandwich, you can generate Meal Powers. These effects can range from making your Pokemon Eggs hatch faster to having a higher chance of catching a Shiny Pokemon.

To Make A Good Sandwich, You Need Recipes

Knowing what should accompany your mortadella and sliced cheese can be challenging. Tinkering around with the picnic’s Creative Mode is fun, but there are many recipes to find in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Before you leave for Mesagoza to go on adventures, you’ll automatically unlock the picnic feature. During this time, I highly recommend you stick to the recipes you get at the start since they’re simple and you only have a limited number of ingredients.

Once you’ve leveled up, you can head to an Every Which Way store to get new recipes. There will be a man dressed in a white polo shirt beside the counter who you can speak to. If you interact with him, he’ll share recipes with you. His selection is limited at first, so if you want to unlock more recipes, you’ll have to collect Gym Badges via the Victory Road path. Each time you defeat a Gym Leader, visit Every Which Way and see if the NPC has a new recipe to share.

Oh, and don’t forget—once you get access to Herba Mystica ingredients, make sure to speak with the NPC again. If you do, you’ll learn a slew of Herba Mystica-exclusive recipes that give Meal Powers that pack a punch.

Another bonus recipe I’d like to share is the one you can get from your character’s house. If you speak to the character’s mother after some progress has been made in the campaign, she’ll share her Veggie Sandwich Recipe with you.

Use Meal Powers to Your Advantage

It goes without saying, but Meal Powers are essentially effects that give you bonuses from eating sandwiches. Meal Powers lasts for half an hour, and you can only have three effects simultaneously. If you’re making a sandwich through Creative Mode, the Meal Power you’ll get is determined by the values of the ingredients used, such as their taste and type.

There are ten Meal Powers in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet:

The Meal Powers I’ve mentioned can range from Level 1 to 3. It’s easier to get the effects you want by using Creative Mode. Whatever toppings and condiments you put will determine the type of Meal Power you’ll get. Keep in mind, though, that ingredients can cancel each other out. For example, if you’re trying to make a sandwich to have Humungo Power as your desired Meal Power, then you might want to avoid using Wasabi as those are specifically used for Teensy Boost.

Getting the Ingredients

How can you make a sandwich if you don’t have any ingredients for it? There are oodles and oodles of toppings and condiments to find in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Like unlocking recipes, the same can be applied to the ingredients. If you want more options for creating the perfect sandwich, you’ll have to earn Gym Badges. Each topping and condiment has a characteristic flavor corresponding to different Pokemon types.

If you’re in need for some of the ingredients we’ve mentioned here, the best way to get them is by visiting Paldea’s four markets: Aquiesta Supermarket, Deli Cioso, Artisan Bakery, and Sure Cans. Luckily for you, you can find most of the stores I’ve mentioned in almost every major city in the region. You can also get ingredients by speaking to NPCs you see picnicking in different Provinces. They’re easily recognizable since they always stand beside a picnic table and their Pokemon. If you speak to them, they’ll give you a bunch of free ingredients and a chance to restore the HP and PP of your party.
