Baldur’s Gate 3 Will Have Cross-Play Soon for PC and Consoles, Larian Studios Confirms
Baldur’s Gate 3 fans will be pleased to hear that cross-play capabilities are in the works. With the game supporting LAN multiplayer and up to four-play co-op, it’ll give players more chances to team up with their friends who might need some assistance. This means that players on PC and PlayStation 5—and Xbox at some point—will all be able to play online in the future.

Larian Studios Confirms Cross-Play for Baldur’s Gate 3
In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Larian Studios has confirmed that cross-play is on the roadmap for Baldur’s Gate 3. There’s no concrete date on when this feature will launch, but Larian states that they have a “loose timeframe” of when it’s likely to arrive since it’s always been planned since the game’s early development.
Michael Douse—the director of publishing in the company—says that “it was always in the planning” and that it wouldn’t be for launch but at a later date. They don’t want to put a date on it until they’re sure.
Play With Your Friends Without Concern
Like Dungeons & Dragons, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a great experience—whether you’re playing solo or with friends. Of course, when it comes to tabletop roleplaying games, things get more fun when you have other people around. Baldur’s Gate 3 already ships with two-player split-screen co-op on the PlayStation 5 and PC, but while you can port saves across those two platforms, playing multiplayer still requires all parties to be on the same platform if they want to team up.
Plus, the split-screen performance for PS5 isn’t an ideal way to play Baldur’s Gate 3. The game is forced into Quality Visual Mode, where everything runs at 30 FPS. And if you’ve been using the PS5 for a while now, you know how 30 FPS feels drastically choppier compared to the 60 FPS Performance Mode.
Moreover, an Xbox version of BG3 is also in the works, which makes things more complicated. We’ll have to wait and see if Larian Studios plans to implement cross-play before or after the Xbox version of the game is out.
Great News for Baldur’s Gate 3 Players
Baldur’s Gate 3 already fully supports cross-platform progression, meaning with the PS5 release, those who have been playing on PC can access their saves on the console. Regardless of whichever platform you play on, your save will be transferred, enabling you to pick up where you left off. If you want to utilize this feature, you’ll first need to create your very own Larian account, which is worth doing so you can take advantage of the ongoing Twitch drops for the game.
Having cross-platform and cross-play is no doubt great news for folks who love co-op RPGs, especially after the recent announcement that the Xbox Series X won’t feature split-screen co-op for BG3 due to hardware limitations. Despite the concern for the Xbox Series S’ performance capabilities, Larian Studios is still aiming to get Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox before 2023 ends.
When cross-play arrives, Baldur’s Gate 3 fans will experience its excellent co-op mechanics alongside their pals.
