Holding Down the Fort with a Fortnite Beginners Guide
This year has seen a massive surge in popularity for the battle royale genre, particularly on the backs of titles such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and in this case, Fortnite.
Fortnite Battle Royale offers a spin-off from the main game, in which 100 players are pitted against each other in solo, dual or squad format. The map is certainly a large one, made up of different areas for you to use to your advantage. However, it can be difficult to get going in a game such as this, so here are a few handy tips to get you started in this Battle Royale with the Fortnite Beginners Guide.
Starting Off: Where to Land?
After a short skirmish period where you have free reign to pretty much do anything within reason, your battle bus will finally arrive and take you to the skies. From here, you will have to decide when and where you jump, giving you 30 seconds to decide. This raises the question as to where should you land?
The difference between an early exit and victory relies solely on how you start the game. Seeing as you are only armed with a pickaxe, this can be used to gather materials for crafting. This shouldn’t be an immediate concern, as your primary objective is to find weapons and ammunition. With this in mind, the best thing to do is to land near a building wherever possible, and make sure it’s one that hasn’t had a whole bunch of other players heading for the same place.
There is a number of derelict buildings such as small sheds and bases that are best aimed for, ones on top of hills are particularly useful to give you a good vantage point and a quicker landing.
Be Aware of The Eye of The Storm
One of the key aspects of the battle royale mode is the eye of the storm. After a minute has passed in-game, a huge white circle will appear on your map, which marks an area that shrinks over time. This area will force players to enter the same area, as those found outside of it as the cirle begins to close will be damaged until they find themselves inside the eye of the storm.
This is one of the most basic fundamentals of Fortnite, but it is also one of the most forgotten. You can get lost playing the game without realizing that you are on the wrong side of the map, so beware!
One thing that does set Fornite apart from other battle royale titles is the building mechanics that are available to you. This comes in particularly handy when building bases, steps up to higher places, and perhaps most importantly, cover in a firefight.
As mentioned earlier, you are armed with a pickaxe which can be used to gather resources from buildings, trees and other features dotted around the map. This essentially allows you to craft your way out of any situation, and will be able to provide you with cover and therefore enough time to get you out of a sticky confrontation.
It’s worth keeping in mind that fall damage is most certainly a thing in Fortnite, so be aware when building a staircase to check your surroundings, unless you want to plummet from a pesky opponent shooting out the bottom of your staircase.
Loot and Treasure Chests
Treasure chests are one of your best friends in Fortnite, and can be found in numerous buildings and other locations across the map. These contain loot with weapons ranging from a variety of rarities, as well as bandages, ammo and more key items that you’ll need to survive. What’s more, treasure chests have the highest loot drop ratio than simply finding items out in the fields, so be sure to crack them open when you come across one.
Also, if you notice a blue flare lying on the ground, keep an eye on the skies. This indicates that a loot drop will be incoming soon, so either use it to lure opponents out or wait it out and grab the loot for yourself.
Use Shield Potions, Don’t Save Them
This might seem a little self-explanatory to some, but it’s often a mistake that players end up making. You are encouraged to use shield potions as soon as you receive them, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it consumes unnecessary space in your inventory, and it won’t replenish your health if you get caught out before having the chance to use it in the first place.
These few tips will see you on your way to many hours of battling to the death with 99 other opponents or team mates in the free-to-play battle royale mode in Fortnite. Stay safe out there!
