Genshin Impact Beidou Character Bio
Name: Beidou (no last name given)
Birthday: 14 February
Constellation: Victor Mare
Title(s): Uncrowned Lord of the Ocean, Queen of the Crux Fleet
In Genshin Impact, Beidou is a 4-star character available through all forms of wishing. She uses a claymore and her Electro Vision to smite opponents. Her Elemental Skill, Tidecaller, behaves differently when the button is pressed or held. Activating the skill with a press will make her slash in front of her, dealing Electro damage. Holding the button will make her put up her shield in a position primed to counter oncoming attacks.
Her Elemental Burst, Stormbreaker, gives her a Thunderbeast’s Targe. While active, hitting enemies with a normal or charged attack electrifies nearby opponents. It only happens once every second, but it stays even as you switch characters. That lets you set up any Electro-related reactions (Overcharge, Electro-charged, Superconduct).
However, Beidou’s defensive style limits her offensive potential. Theoretically, she can be an Electro offensive powerhouse. However, the player has to play somewhat defensively to unleash that potential. There’s still a focus on more obviously offensive-focused characters, but the correct build can let her keep up. She still remains a fairly popular character, with people even trying to buy a Genshin Impact account with her in it.
Captain Beidou Character Story in Genshin Impact
Everybody in Liyue knows of Captain Beidou. Whether the stories about her are exaggerated or not, you can be sure that she’s an impressive person. Gossip abounds, saying she can cleave the head of a sea monster in one hit, or that she can channel Electro through her sword. Dockworkers and new sailors add more, from beating Ningguang at chess (twice!) to sailing through a bad storm. With each repetition, the stories grow, perhaps inflating her reputation a little bit too much. However, those who have met Beidou can agree that the stories don’t actually exaggerate that much. There is a reason why she’s called the ‘Uncrowned Lord of the Ocean,’ after all.
Liyue is a land where business rules. Some even lament that even humans are commodities. Yet, when looking at how Beidou behaves in Genshin Impact, can you really say that? Once, while sailing through a storm with dwindling supplies, she saw a smaller boat struggle. She had her crew tow the boat through the storm and into a safe mooring place, even sharing their meager food with the weary merchants. After getting to safety, the thankful merchants became a trusted trade partner for the Crux.
Most would think that Ningguang pulls the strings behind Beidou and the fleet. All the former says in reply is that she chooses Beidou, and working with the fleet is incidental. As for the person in question, she’s the master of her own fate, and nobody else can pull her strings. Proving that, among Ningguang’s collaborators, Beidou is the most confrontational of all. Despite that, Ningguang believes that Beidou is the most reliable person in Liyue, as long as you tell her the truth.
She invited Xiangling to cook for one of the crew’s celebratory banquets. Xiangling, ready to prove her worth despite her youth, took the chance and cooked for them. The crew loved her cooking, and let Beidou invite her to some of their trips. The young chef accepted the invitation, wanting to know about what kinds of ingredients she can find in the open sea. With Beidou as her taste-tester, she’s sure to create great new dishes.
Beidou’s First Mate pulls new crew members aside for drinks after their first successful journey. He then tells them a story about their captain. The crew had sailed to uncharted waters and found themselves in a storm with dwindling supplies. Beidou had stood staunch at the helm, singing a Liyue sea shanty until they got out of the storm into safer waters. More details were added to this story as time passed, resulting in all new recruits worshiping Beidou as a goddess.
‘Its fins formed the ocean deep, its tail the mountain high.’ Those were the lyrics to one fishermen’s song. Beidou grew up listening to it as a lullaby. Along with the legendary tales of how Rex Lapis defeated monstrous sea gods, she got the idea to see and later, defeat one such creature.
On one journey across the open waters, she sang it differently. With her crew singing along, they sailed with Haishan in ignorance. Rising from the deep, a creature with the features of both dragon and fish bore at them with waves it created. The time to fulfill her dream and defeat the creature was now upon her.
She had tried and failed many times before, but this time, she’ll make sure to get it. With her best greatsword and a crew of the best crack shots, the battle raged for four days. As harpoons, cannon fire, ropes, and arrows rained down on the leviathan, Beidou battled the monster. Even through the night, when Haishan had the advantage, she and the crew sat in vigil.
She only needed one strike.
As dawn arrived, Beidou felt a shift in the waters. Thirsty, hungry, and tired, she took up her claymore and slashed at the approaching threat. A crack resounded from the slash, one that seemed could split the moon or cleave a mountain in half. That slash severed the head of the giant sea monster clean off in one move.
A clap of thunder followed a lightning strike that split the ocean, and a Vision descended onto Beidou’s hands. It was a gift worthy of one who defeated this monster without the aid of a god.
The Electro Archon is also called the God of Eternity. A story about the hero who slew a monstrous beast without any kind of Vision is worthy to be told unto eternity, don’t you think? No matter, the legend will persist for a long time, even if the characters will eventually be forgotten.
Although the eyepatch, love for alcohol, and sailing are common markers for pirates, we can’t tell if Beidou is one. We as players will never know how exactly she gets the merchandise she procures, whether that’s through honest trade or some other means. At any rate, Beidou can be a valuable ally to your team in Genshin Impact, with the right artifacts and weapons, of course. For more character histories, check out our Genshin Impact Noelle Bio!
