What’s the Best One Overall?

Ah. No, see, for this article, we won’t be naming an official champion. Instead, I’m going to be telling you the best games that you need to check out. Okay? Because who’s to say that one super popular free multiplayer game is better than another? Not I, that’s for sure! I’m going to present the research and you get to sort out whatever you want. Heck, if I was you, I’d try ‘em all! I’ve played all of them, and I can heartily recommend them.

What’s the Best Free Multiplayer Games on PS4?

Let’s go down the list. First on the list, we have the granddaddy of free PS4 games: Warframe. Warframe is a ridiculously smooth, wonderful game that has no right to be as cool as it is. It doesn’t even remotely handle like a free game. It handles better than most big-budget games, and it has tons of lore, loot, and weapons. You can do all kinds of cool stuff, as you basically get superpowers. You’re also supposed to work with friends, and although it’s fun alone, the multiplayer is incredibly enjoyable. You’ll often hear it referred to as the “Free Destiny.” Also, word of the wise—you’re going to get cocky and think you can do a lot of the harder missions by yourself. You can’t. Promise. Get a buddy and get in there!

Next, we have the big one. The most controversial game on this list, Fortnite Battle Royale. Yes, I know. I’ve heard it all. I’ve heard from people who absolutely despise this game and people who praise it like it fell out of heaven with a golden aura surrounding it. Here’s the thing: it’s free, and it’s fun, and it’s entertaining. It’s an enormous franchise and in this winner (survivor)-takes-all contest where only the last one standing comes out on top, it’s actually quite a bit of fun. Toxic, perhaps, but fun. Plus, bonus points, it’s cross platform compatible!

Let’s shift to something more relaxed and laid back: Fishing Planet, where instead of you shooting everything, you’re catching them. It’s actually kind of amazing how well made this game is. It is remarkably realistic, calming, yet not boring. The graphics are solid, the mechanics are solid, the gameplay is solid, the AI are solid, and overall, it’s just a good, entertaining game that I’d heartily recommend.

Ah, yes. The thing that stole a lot of Fortnite’s audience: Apex Legends. It showed up out of absolutely nowhere and took the gaming world by storm. It’s Titanfall, but in a battle royale. As someone who’s played quite a bit of it, I can assure you that this game has a little something for everyone. It’s got all kinds of play styles, locations, weapons, and pretty much everything else you’d want. Plus, awesome voice lines.

Wanting something different? Shake it up with Brawlhalla, which gets you bonus points if you can say that without smirking. It’s a great name for a great game. If you have to explain it to someone, odds are that you’re going to compare it to Super Smash Bros. Unlike some of the other games, this one is incredibly easy to grasp right off the bat: fight for the 2D map. Get the other person off through whatever means necessary, and “whatever means necessary” means beating the snot out of each other until someone falls off. Ridiculous? Yes, yes it is. But undeniably enjoyable, and a hit with all kinds of people (even your friend that doesn’t like video games!). You can actually get eight people on the game at once, and that, my reader friend, is when stuff gets crazy.

Shake things up even more with The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. This little game is short (the whole thing takes about 2 hours) but there’s a reason it makes this list: because it’s really, really good! It’s exactly the way that video game storytelling is meant to be, but you could probably guess that right off the bat when you realize it’s made in the Life is Strange franchise. This game is mostly meant not to beat something up, or catch something, or anything. It’s a puzzle solver with a huge emphasis on storytelling, interaction, and high-quality animation.

Conclusion

Well, there ya have it, gang! The best free to play games on PS4. Well, I guess technically the best free multiplayer games on PS4 mostly, but anyway, there’s lots of choices out there. From my research, my own experience, and from countless fans, these free games are bound to satisfy your craving to game and do it at a hefty price tag of zero dollars and zero cents.

Until next time, get out there and have some fun!
