OSRS Splashing Guide for Huge EXP Gains
In Old School RuneScape, players have the ability to train Magic in different ways. One of these methods is known as Splashing. This way of training has the player casting combat spells when facing an enemy whilst their magic accuracy is too low. Even though this doesn’t actually deal damage, it will still offer players experience instead. There is a lot more to learn about this method, which will be discussed in this OSRS Splashing guide.
The following guide will discuss the following:
- Equipment Needed
- Splashing Locations
- Rates and Strategies
To get started, we need to know what equipment is required of us to get underway with Splashing.

OSRS Splashing Guide – Equipment Needed
To kick things off, you first need to have items that you can wear that will lead to your Magic Attack being -64. For example, you can use a Platebody or Armour set that is fully bronze, iron, steel, black, mithril, adamant, or rune. Having these items with Snakeskin boots, and Snakeskin vambraces plus an elemental staff to reduce the runes required for autocast can be of great use for this.
If you haven’t reached past 40 Range, then you can still get the Magic attack that you are looking for by switching your elemental staff for a Cursed goblin staff from Diango in Draynor. If you are a member, then you can use Granite equipment to wear to get the required Magic stats, though avoid using the Granite body since its better for you to use Platebody in this instance.
OSRS Splashing Locations Guide
Typically, you can use Splashing against any monster that isn’t able to deal enough damage to deplete your health fully. For this method of Magic training, most players tend to use seagulls and rats. If you do choose to opt for seagulls, then you can find them in Port Piscarilius and Port Sarim.
You can check the Bestiary to find other monsters that are in relevant locations, but there are parts of Lumbridge, such as the castle basement, that you should avoid. The reason being is that areas such as these where spells offer no experience if the player’s Magic is too low for them to be able to damage their opponents. This was supposedly introduced because many new players were left confused by the sheer amount of other players using Splashing on rats.
Rates and Strategies for Splashing
You will then have to look into what the rates are for each spell. Naturally, there are certain spells that are much more useful than others. For example, you can use Wind Strike at level 1 with the Air and Mind runes, which will net you 6600xp per hour. There is a cost to cast as well, with this rate of casting being 8 coins. The costs can decrease by using an elemental staff.
Getting into later levels, you can look into better spells. Fire Wave at level 75 needs Air, Fire and Blood runes, with a rate of 51,000xp per hour. At level 85 you can use Water Surge, with Air, Water and Wrath runes for a slight increase at 55,800xp per hour. Earth Surge, using Air, Earth and Wrath runes will give you 58,200xp per hour, and Fire Surge at level 95 gives 60,600 xp per hour with Air, Fire and Wrath runes.
A formula worth mentioning is that each game tick stands at 0.6s, and a magic combat spell takes up 5 ticks. Therefore, in the space of an hour players are able to splash 1200 combat spells. The raw cost of casting which you will have seen examples of above will assume the runes that you need to buy. The cost for the basic elemental staff meanwhile is for more elemental and air runes that are used for non-Wind related spells.
Ancient Magicks Splashing
Moving onto Ancient Magicks, you can start from level 50 with Smoke Rush, with a base experience cast of 30, and uses Chaos and Death runes as well as Air and Fire. You can earn 36,000xp per hour from this strategy alone. As with the other spells, you can increase the amount of experience that you earn as the levels increase.
For example, there are a number of Ancient Magicks that you can use when at level 80. Blood Blitz at this level can earn up to 54,000xp per hour. Then you have Ice Blitz at 55,200xp ph, followed by a number of effective barrages. Starting with Smoke Barrage at level 86, you have 57,600xp per hour coming in, whilst the hourly rate of experience for the Shadow Barrage at level 88 stands at 58,800. Level 92’s Blood Barrage surpasses the 60,000 mark for hourly experience at 61,200, and then there’s Ice Barrage at 94 for 62,400xp.
Then you have to consider how many splashes its going to take in order for you to hit level 99. With spells such as Wind Strike, you are looking at 2,367,467 splashes, taking 1973 hours to complete. Alternatively, you can wait until you have managed to get yourself to a higher level, where you can use the likes of Fire Wave, needing only 317,135 splashes, taking 264.3 hours. Fire Surge is your best bet, taking 301,246 splashes in 251 hours.
Conclusion
So there is a lot for you to be getting your head around when it comes to using Splashing in Old School RuneScape. There are a number of factors that you need to consider when attempting this way of Magic training. However, we hope that this OSRS Splashing guide has served as a good introduction for you into this rather unconventional way of you training Magic. There are certain gear requirements that you will need to look into, and it will ultimately depend on your levels, runes and abilities to make the most of it. However, with plenty of practice, and a little bit of research, then you will be able to make the best of what is considered to be a very effective and unorthodox way for getting in as much Magic training as you possibly can.
