Playing an MMO doesn’t mean you must be stuck using a mouse and keyboard—virtual reality can be another option. Sure, you can argue that the VR concept has lost some hype, but you can’t deny it still has a place in the future of gaming. Being able to step into another world and become someone else temporarily used only to be a dream, but with VR, it turned into a reality. Thankfully, the number of VR MMOs has increased over the last year.

If you have a VR headset lying around and want to get some use out of it, you’ve come to the right place. Many VR MMORPGs are available in the market, but here, we’ll only be talking about the cream of the crop.

But First, What’s A VR MMORPG?

Virtual reality MMOs is a video game interface wherein you use input devices, a head-mounted display, and audio to generate an in-game environment you could interact with. And since you will be playing Massive Multiplayer Online games, you can play with thousands of gamers and interact with each other in a virtually evolving world in real time. With the power of the internet, you can also participate in PvE and PvP elements.

Zenith: The Last City

Think Sword Art Online and Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds. Put those two together with a VR headset, and you’ve got Zenith: The Last City. Made by San Fransisco-based developers from Ramen VR, Zenith: The Last City boasts anime-like graphics and JRPG gameplay. The game has a fantastic open world you can explore; no location is inaccessible, as you can climb and glide your way anywhere.

Currently, the game only has two classes: Blade Master and Essence Mage. And from there, you can pick one of the three roles: DPS, tanks, and support. More classes will come soon, but you’ll have to stick with these for now. Blade Master lets you swing two massive swords in combat to hit weak points. You can also use them to block enemy attacks. Meanwhile, the Essence Mage is a whole different beast altogether. In this class, you’ll be using a book of spells that you can use to cast magic. Through hand movements, you can activate certain spells in your arsenal.

In terms of lore, Zenith: The Last City is set in a futuristic city. You’re dropped into a post-cataclysmic event known as “The Fracture,” where you and other players must fight gods to prevent the resurgence of a catastrophe that’s awaited towards ending humanity. Using the Power of Essence—the magical lifeblood of all living beings in the in-game world—makes it possible for you to challenge the wrath of the gods.

Zenith: The Last City boasts a mix of powerful champions and villains, with other features also available, including instanced dungeons, quests, world bosses, guilds, and class customization. The more you play, the more unique abilities you unlock for your character, such as throwing your swords as a Blade Master or creating massive AoE effects as an Essence Mage.

Overall, if you’re a fan of anime and want an MMO with a thriving playerbase, Zenith: The Last City will surely be a blast.

VRKraft

Digital Messiah Games’ VRKraft gives me Dark and Darker vibes on the surface, but it offers much more than it shows. This is sort of cheating since the game isn’t released yet; it’s an upcoming title still in the Early Access stage on Steam. However, the developers did include a game trailer, making it a good choice for VR MMO fans.

The adventures will take place in Three-World, a realm with its fair share of bad days. Your task is to stop the ascend of Tetrac, the mighty ancient dragon. You can save the world as a Mage, Priest, Warrior, Paladin, or Hunter. You must also select one of the three roles: healer, damage, and tank.

In VRKraft, you can join dungeons with three other party members. PvP scenarios—like Capture the Flag and Domination—also have the same setup. It’s all standard stuff; craft gear, make friends, and create enchantments to prepare yourself for the upcoming battle. If that’s your thing, make sure to wishlist VRKraft to be notified when it releases.

A Township Tale

A Township Tale leans towards being a multiplayer game rather than a VR MMO, but not all MMO players seek large-scale social interactions, thus including this on the list. The game was published and developed by Alta, and it’s an open-world, multiplayer RPG that’s perhaps the most chill out of all the titles we’ve discussed. You can host servers that can have up to eight members. Moreover, the character system is based on professions, making it possible for you to become a warrior, a cook, a blacksmith, or a woodcutter. The game also has survival features, such as eating to keep your HP full.

The best part about A Township Tale is that it’s free to download and play! You don’t need to spend a dime on it. If you’re the type of person that just wants to hang out with friends in an in-game world while completing quests, A TownShip Tale is a solid recommendation.
