POE Skill Gems

So what is POE Skill Gems? Skills in RPG’s follow a somewhat traditional path. Skills are acquired as a basic or low level and through experience the user moves up the ladder to becomes equipped to use that skill; becoming a medium level player or expert/grandmaster. Skills range from the staple bunch which users are automatically given when the game starts to rare and unusual skills.

Path of Exile offers a pretty interesting take on skills – splitting them into both active and passive, before linking them closely to the weapon or item the character is using at that particular point. In this post we will give you the fill low down; helping you know your poe skill gems from your sockets and your attributes!

What are Skills?

In Path of Exiles,  skills can be either ‘active’ or ‘passive’.  Skills range from the basic skills given when you start the game to the detailed and rare skills which require both practice and training.

What are Gems?

Active Skills are stored or contained in skills gems.  These ‘gems’ are detachable jewel like objects which can be attached or removed to objects or items. When attached they become active and can help automatically boost the value of that item. All gems in equipped items gain 10% of that value. With experience and effectiveness the player can increase the value of that gem significantly. The gem retains value even when it is removed or traded! Gems do not need to be utilized for them to gain experience, only equipped. Gems can also help players level up.

The gem retains value even when it is removed or traded!

Sockets

Acquiring items is pretty normal in MMOs and Path of Exile is no exception, but mixes it up aswell. Many items have empty coloured sockets which you can use to attach a skill gem. Attach a skill gem into that socket and you immediately gain the use of the particular skill. Some items have multiple sockets, which can be different colours and they are closely linked to the attributes to which that item is aligned too.  So of the three attributes, when using a sword, strength and dexterity will be more important than intelligence.
