PoE New Gems for the Expansion: War for the Atlas

Greetings Exiles! Doc. Moo with you again, this time with something a little different.

With the recent release of “War for the Atlas” (PoE 3.1), I have noticed there aren’t a lot of resources outlining the PoE New Gems (active and support skill gems). This won’t serve as a guide but rather as a breakdown to give an idea of what to expect before you dive in!

New POE Active Skill Gems

Here is a brief look at all the active POE skill gems pulled from the 3.1 patch notes.


Has had a change and has been divided into two separate gems. The physical portion of it is now a Strength POE Skill Gem that curse’s all targets in an area, causing them to take increased physical damage and increased physical damage over time. Attacks against cursed enemies have a chance to inflict bleeding and maim.


is the damage over time component and is now an Intelligence Skill POE Gem that curses all targets in an area, making them less resistant to chaos damage and causing them to take increased damage over time. Cursed enemies also take additional chaos damage when hit. Existing Vulnerability skill gems have become Despair.

Body Swap:

Is an Intelligence & Dexterity POE Skill Gem that appears to be a new movement ability option. It functions similarly to Lightning Warp though it requires a corpse to target for the movement portion.

Its potential for damage could be ok as it is based on the life of the corpse (3% fire damage based on life). It has a 0.8s base cast time as opposed to Lightning Warp’s 1.0s. Be aware it does not have a chance to critically strike.

Volatile Dead:

Is an Intelligence & Dexterity POE Skill Gem which seems to now give us the chance to give monsters a taste of their own Volatiles!! It will cause corpses near the targeted location to explode, dealing damage in a small area (this won’t be the skills source of damage as it does not scale to spell damage), and creating an orb which moves towards nearby enemies before dealing damage in a larger area.

The orb appears to be able to off screen, and there is no limit to the amount of orbs you can have at one time. The delay between the corpse exploding and the orb spawning may make it feel clunky but a less duration support could potentially change that.


Is an Intelligence & Dexterity POE Skill Gem that is used to generate corpses similarly to Desecrate except it’s a projectile that can be supported by Spell Echo and Greater Multiple Projectiles to create a potential 10 corpses at once. As a base it fires only one projectile.

It’s interaction with Volatile Dead & Cremation (detailed below) show potential though I am not sure where it leaves Desecrate as it just appears to be more efficient.


Is a Dexterity POE Skill Gem that explodes a targeted corpse dealing area damage (that once again cannot be scaled with spell damage) and turning it into a volcanic geyser. The miniature volcano will fire projectiles over the course of its duration in an area.

Interactions between Greater Multiple Projectiles, Increased Aoe, Concentrated Effect and Increased Duration all appear to be possible.

This is a build I will be testing so stay tuned for that guide in the future if this is something that interests you!

New POE Support Gems

Ancestral Call

Is a Strength POE Support Gem that creates up to two spectral warriors either side of your character replicating the attack skill used. This functions similarly to Multi-strike except it will only create additional attacks when there are enough targets present to do so. It will not function single target and a gem swap is advised.

It will possibly increase Molten Strikes clear speed but I haven’t tested this myself.


Is a Dexterity POE Support Gem that adds extra projectiles either side of the character up to 4 adjacent points, the result is a wide spread of projectiles.

If used in conjunction with Flame Totem or Freezing Pulse the result would look something like a wave of fire or ice respectively. I would like to test its interaction with the Freezing Pulse threshold jewel “First Snow.”

Mirage Archer

Is a Dexterity POE Support Gem that creates a “Mirage Archer” after hitting an enemy with a supported active bow skill gem. The “Mirage Archer” will continue to use that skill for its duration.

This does not scale with minion damage.

Storm Barrier

Is an Intelligence POE Support Gem that creates a barrier around your character while you channel the supported active skill gem. The barrier provided additional protection from physical and lightning damage whilst also giving you a chance to gain a power charge when hit.

This looks really cool but I don’t think it will be worth losing a gem slot that would otherwise be taken up by a more multiplier.

Spell Cascade

Is an Intelligence POE Support Gem that works exclusively with area-targeting skills like Firestorm & Bladefall. It is pretty straight forward and simply casts another duplicate of the supported active skill gem both behind and in front of where you have targeted.

Interactions with Spell Cascade and Flameblast may be less exciting than we might think. I don’t imagine GGG (Grinding Gear Games) to allow skills to overlap too much. Firestorm and Bladefall might see something similar in that the cascaded spell casts will happen outside of the initial spells area.

There have been significant buffs to Detonate Dead’s damage and the potential of Spell Cascade + Desecration and then a Detonation could potentially be really strong.

Closing Thoughts

I am extremely excited to sink my teeth into all of these and will do my very best to put some guides out for several viable interactions. The new POE Support Gems could serve to potentially revive old POE Skill Gems that haven’t seen as much love in our recent metas.
