Inclusivity is something that many companies have started to integrate into their products to invite more users. Bungie made this attempt on X (Twitter), but instead, the developers experienced backlash for using a term highly looked down upon in the Hispanic community while promoting Destiny 2.

POC Fans Offended by Bungie’s Use of the Word’ Latinx’

Bungie officially launched Latin@Bungie, an employee resource group that helps developers get different perspectives and opinions to promote inclusivity. In their X post announcing their IDEA initiative, the company included ‘Latinx.’ The appearance of this word has stirred up the Latin community, criticizing Bungie over their word choices.

In a wave of replies, X users blatantly voiced their disgust over using the word. ‘Latinx’ was only recently introduced as gender-neutral term for the Hispanic Community. However, most POCs do not condone its usage and have found it offensive.

Most of the replies have been primarily negative, with many pointing out that they would instead rather be referred to as Latino, Latina, or Latine. Unfortunately, Bungie has not handled the situation appropriately. Many negative replies to the thread have been hidden by the author, which many users have pointed out. The company’s attempt to bury criticisms has backfired as more people came out of the woodwork to voice their frustrations.

How this publicity disaster will impact Bungie product sales like Destiny 2 is still being determined. The post alienated some potential customers from the Hispanic community, and the company has yet to make any moves to address the situation other than hiding replies.

Using ‘Latinx’ is Not Widely Accepted

The term ‘Latinx’ was created by academics and activists to make a gender-inclusive representation for all Hispanics. Most words in Spanish are gendered, so some people have decided that another word can denote those who are non-binary or genderfluid. While this was made with good intentions, many in the community have found the term degrading and offensive.

There are several reasons why many Hispanics aren’t fond with the term. As a heavily gendered language, adding letters to words can indicate what they fall on. However, the suffix ‘-x’ is not considered gender-neutral in Spanish, which defeats the purpose of why ‘Latinx’ was created in the first place.

One of the main reasons why Hispanics avoid the term is because it was imposed on them. Latinx was created by academics and activists who weren’t part of the Latin community. The sudden introduction of the word without consultation did not sit well with them. Hispanics see the lack of consent as a way of taking control of the language away from them.

Many have also pointed out that Latinos and Latinas are already inclusive, as they can be used for various genders. In addition, the term ‘Latine’ already exists, which is more accepted. The creation of Latinx is seen as unnecessary.

Inclusivity in Gaming

Many gaming companies have increased their efforts to be more inclusive in their products. While they mainly want to expand their market, the objective is to create games that are more accessible to everyone and have safer spaces. Companies have used inclusive themes and characters that will allow POCs and non-conforming genders to immerse themselves.

Inclusivity is essential because it allows everyone to access and enjoy the perks of gaming. These themes also serve as educational tools that can teach topics to gamers that they usually don’t learn in their schools or social circles. The most important aspect of being inclusive is promoting acceptance and diversity, which can improve societal relationships.

While companies are encouraged to practice inclusivity, they should do it appropriately. Devs should contact their communities, as their efforts might be counterproductive. Bungie’s latest attempt is a prime example of well-intentioned actions gone wrong. In addition, their decisions to double down and hide negative critiques should be avoided, as companies should be receptive and accountable.
